altenator facts

Hi Guys
Another question popped into my head so I need to ask to get the answer.
Is the altarnator 24v like the starter is on the 80s or is it 12v.
I thought it may be 24 so as to charge the two batteries being 12v x 2, but
then I thought all the electrics are 12v so im confused.com at thye moment.
If I was to replace the altenator with another one does the new one have to
be the same( from a 80 series cruiser) or could it be from another cruiser
like a 3litre.
cheers

John,
The alternator is 12v, the batteries are wired in parallel,
giving you 12v and teice the amps.
Regards, Clive.

or even twice the amps.

was a 24v one off a 3 litre cruiser. Thought Id grab a bargain, so I guess
ill leave it alone.

Hi John
just to mention to you :here are very popular the last models 3.0 Cruisers
and right now they sell them like warm bread.
the reason: after New Eve they will be more expensive. So if the car (the
cheapest one with only 2 seats) cost today 30000? , the next year will be
35-40000?
and I'm talking about LC 120 D4D with only 2 seats. And LC 100 -even the
dealers don't know for sure............
cheers
Lubo

Hi Clive,
Are you sure, I always thought they were wired in series for starting
giving 24volt starting.

No Julian they are not. The batteries are connected in parallel for
normal use, on starting the contactor connects them in series, so you
get your 24v., only for starting. The earlier cruisers, the 60 series
being one, had a 24v system complete, usually employing a dropper for
the sound system.

Hi Clive
I know the 80 cruiser has a 24v starter but why.
On some other lists you see them talk about installing a second battery
which means they only have one to start with, so why do we have two.
Is the 24v starter stronger than a 12v one and if so how.
Just say you were to fit a 24v battery would that be the same as the two 12v
ones.
And if you could do that would you then have to have the 24v alternator to
charge the battery.
nad if you did or could have the 24v battery would you then have to change
all the wiring/bulbs/ fuses etc.
Just curiour .

John,
24v starting is a lot better for the battery when it is a bit on
the cold side, there is less loss in the cables and connections, and
less loss due to temperature. In the UK it will probably not make much
difference. I have never seen a 24v car battery, so fitting one is not
a problem but yes, it would be the same as Two 12's.
You would need a 24v alternator and you would need to change all the
bulbs, as well as the wiper motors, relays, indicator unit, sensors
and gauges. Definately not worth it.
Most of the time when people are fitting a second battery it is for
powering a winch, or other accessories, without draining the vehicle
battery.
I have an ex-army (East german) lorry that is 24v. The lorry was
available in 12v but the starting was 24v as in the cruisers. East
Germany does get a bit colder than us in the winter.
Regards, Clive.

Thanks Clive
Sorry about all the questions but as usual I like to know a little more
than i do at the moment .
