Quick question when some of you have time. Alternator appears to be defunct on my 24v 4.2. Do any have recommendations for a replacement and the necessary output. I see there are some big variations in £ out there.

Thanks and happy festive season to all.
Peter

Denso from Opie Oil do a good deal on a new one and not a reman

If you can wait and don't need to drive the vehicle then it can be rebuilt by specialist company's....
Otherwise avoid the cheap Chinese ones.... Roughtrax only sell quality parts and have a reputation to uphold so they would be my first stop....

As mine is the original (I am fairly certain) I think I will bite the bullet and buy a new one. I have seen the new Denso 80amp for just under £200.

Just an update, after much f'ing and j'effing I have changed the alternator for a second hand one. Still no charge. Dave I note you say the plug can fail. It looked OK? How could I check for a problem? I assume one wire will be switched when the key is turned on? Are there any fuses that might have blown.
I had a new immobiliser/alarm installed, could anything have been upset there? It might be that I have 2 duff alternators, but I find that hard to believe.
Thanks.

Basic questions....
Is the charge light on ?
with the engine running try supplying the alternator exciter wire at the alternator multi plug with a supply direct from the battery + terminal....but put a 3watt panel light type bulb in the line....
This should then cause the alternator to start charging .... if it does then you have a problem on the exciter wire circuit .
Others on here may have a pin out picture of the multi plug and colour of the wire so you get the right one..... if no charge then suspect duff alternator

Grimbo how would I ID the exciter wire? Would it be the thin wire? Where would that wire be powered from? Is the bulb going in line to prove the wire is live?
Thank you for the reply.

As an aside I am not sure the red light is even coming on with the key. There is definitely a red charge light plus the gauge?

Typically yes it will be the thin wire....
The bulb is to protect the diode pack from a spike and stops to higher draw of amps as you are missing out any other protection by going direct .
The other thing to check is you have around 11 volts at that thin wire with the ignition on and engine stopped....check the multi plug when off the alternator but also when you plug it onto the alternator try probing down the back or loom side of the plug to ensure you still have that voltage

Need to check on mine but yes there is a charge light....if the bulb has gone than you won't get any charge because this bulb is in the circuit of the exciter wire ( this is the reason I suggested you replicate this resistance with a bulb when you go direct to the battery + )
If the bulb has gone I would expect you to find no voltage at the multi plug with ignition on

Better I look at the handbook and see where the light is.
How does one access the dashboard lights?

Well Grimbo you were right, school boy error on my part. There is not a charge red light on the dash when I switch on. Now I am guessing this could be the bulb but the engine has been out recently and the alarm/immobiliser has been changed. How can I get to the dash bulbs? Incidentally is there an oil pressure light as well as the gauge?
Thanks
