An electronics wiz required request

Hiya Guys and Gals
Do any of you know a really good electronics genius whizzo guy who can set
up ma cruiser with GPS, sat phone and roaming mobile broadband all rolled
into one?
I'm selling up and travelling, and want to be able to communicate with
everyone I know by Fax, email, phonecall etc in those deepest darkest parts
of the world.
I'm hawking for contract work overseas, if truth be known, but in the
process I'm going to damn well enjoy myself!
I'm starting in Malta then after a stint in the bush in Australia I'm
heading off returning to Africa.
Cheers y'all

Hi Renate,
Lucky you !!! J
I don't know anyone I am afraid. Have setup a car pc myself with a touch
screen attached to the screen, and the carpc bolted to the back of the rear
seats.
GPS receiver is then attached to the pc so it can receive a satellite
signal, which works great with Memory Map and other satellite navigation
software such Microsoft's Mappoint ( tested with 2009 version), although
don't believe that has world map coverage
http://www.microsoft.com/mappoint/en-us/default.aspx.
For total coverage of broadband speeds you could buy something like this ->
http://www.groundcontrol.com/BGAN.htm (Hope you have a big bank balance J).
But if it was me I would use a 3g broadband such as Vodafone who are
increasing the 3g coverage abroad, although obviously in the middle of the
bush it's going to difficult so get a signal, so the satellite option may be
the only answer.
Should you Cruiser catch fire in the bush, the above will be no good to call
a fire engine :p. So you may need a http://satphone.co.uk/rental.shtml that
is independent of the cruiser.
Someone who has been all through all of this( on a overland journey) may
have some better advice on the costs of everything! ?
Hope it helps...
Martin.

Hey Martin
I'd say its not luck so much! - have had to lose pretty much everything to
be free to roam (like I used to!) At least it might be a brand new start!
And yay! I'm looking forward to be 'incognito' again
I have a laptop which can be plugged into the ciggy lighter via a special
adaptor. The Garmin GPS I used to have was lost in the Grand Erg Oriental
in 2001.
I've used a sat fone but haven't hired one out - I understand it costs a
small fortune to hire one - it might be better to buy one maybe. However,
I'd be content with a roaming mobile broadband device - nothing really
fancy, that I could maybe attach to something, so I can use a mobile fone
too in areas where there is a signal. I want to boost the sat signal too,
if I can, but have no idea how to go about organising any of this - it's a
brand new project. Something I have no experience with - I'm prepared to
learn how to do it myself but need some serious help to start it off.
Thanks so much for your input. I did once used to have a sat card that you
just plugged in to a pcicia socket that I took in early 2001. I think I've
still got the card, but don't know whether it could be used in my current
laptop though. Maybe I should try it, I'd have to get some more software I
think, too.
Nup, don't even have a bank account at the mo..
Thanx so much! Keep em coming! Y'all on ELCO!
Cheers
Renate

Darren
Thanks so much!
I'm due to 'appear' in Australia from February next year, and if I'm in the
area, I'll certainly call in on you!
Initially I'm spending one month in Australia - tourist visa only, I'm not
sure whether I could extend it, but I guess I'll be able to at some point.
If I come into some serious money I'll be in Australia a lot longer than a
month..National Lottery here I come.
Regards, and, cheers
