Are you planning on upgrading your 80s suspension in the next few months??

Hi,
At some point in the coming months I will be replacing my 80 and will
probably try to tart it up to sell it to one of the local yummy mummies
because I know they will pay a fair bit more than some of you lot ;-))
Anyway, I currently have an OME 2.5" heavy duty lift on the car, which
works out at around a 3-4" lift without any weight in the car, which is
a little hight for the average user.
So what I would like to do is to swap the suspension out for standard
Toyota items and rather than buying new was wondering if any of you are
removing stock servicable suspension items and want to get rid of them
I would be keen to take them off your hands.

Julian,
You could be in luck here. I still have in the shed the stuff
that came off mine when it was upgraded, shocks and springs, still in
the boxes that D 4x4 put them in, I assume it's all there. I was
keeping it in case I wanted to sell the car, same as you really. I am
having a clearout and am 50/50 about this stuff. Give it a couple of
days and see if I can make up my mind.
Regards, Clive.

Hi Clive,
OK, thanks. I don't expect to be doing anything to the 80 until the
new year, but thought I would sow the seeds now.

What are you going to get as a replacement?
And by the way, April is a great time to go. Cold in the mountains, wild
spring flowers and hot by day in the desert. You'll miss the almond blossom
which is a shame as it is truly amazing in the Ameln valley near Tafraoute.

Hi Jeremy,
After months of pondering the various options I have settled on getting
a 100 series.
Starting next week the LC will be used daily for school runs - we need
the 7 seats and the four wheel drive is handy on the very steep country
lanes between here and the school - Gilly got stuck one or two times
last year (as JB and Gareth will bear witness) just on wet slippery
leaves on the road and as soon as the frosts come I use the 80 becaue
the road is quite treacherous.
The 100 is a little bit bigger than an 80 inside which will be handy
with the new car seat laws - we have 2 out of 3 of our children in
booster seats, but for Morocco will get ones with good side support so
the extra width will be a benefit.
I can tweak the 100 to provide better economy than an 80 and with the
IFS it will be more comfortable as a daily drive as well as along the
dirt tracks in Morocco.
I have yet to get into a situation where I really need the full
articulation of a solid front axle - if I ever get to that point I can
always drive round it.
I'm not concerned about reliability of the electronics - we aren't
talking about Discoveries here and amusingly Anjam's problem yesterday
was possibly the first report of a sensor failing that I have come
across in two years of monitoring 100 series lists. Worse case
scenario I'll just carry spares of the key sensors.
All being well I'm aiming to get the replacement in October/November
and then strip down and reassemble most key parts over the winter. I
have a very good budget so will fit long range tanks, wheel carriers,
etc from the outset.
I'll design the purerly overlanding kit like water tanks, drawer
systems, sliders, etc to be easily removable so that I can take them
off/out and store them when not needed.
I will probably go a little over the top with protection kit like sump
guards, sliders, front and rear bumpers, etc, but as my wife points out
we will be travelling with the whole family and their safety is the
primary concern - thus she doesn't mind the spend (hooray!!).
I'm aiming to keep it for several years so will go to town on it now on
the basis that I may not need some of the kit for Morocco, but it will
be used at some point.
I will also be spending a lot of time painting and waxoyling the
underside as I strip it down so that it is well protected for the
future.
I'll most likely buy in front and rear bumpers, long range fuel tank,
etc, but will aim to make my own draw systems, sliders, water tanks.
Once the car is read in the spring I'll do a couple of play days on
Salisbury Plain and probably a trip to France to shake things down
before the main trip.
All being well I'll document the research, build and trip on a website
somewhere. Most of it will be quite general info so will hopefully be
useful for others.

Sure, everything can be fixed, but it's a real pain that can be avoided.
Don't get carried away with such gear if you are going to need it for
one month in a year. That's unless you have lots of time to buid it
and lot's of space to keep it for 11 months. Ask me how I know :)
In the latest Argos catalogue I saw a pink sat nav, pink toolbox and
stylish pink floor mats. C'mon Julian - you know she wants it!

Hi Roman,
True, much the same as other components like gearboxes, diffs, etc - these
things break with about the same sort of frequency so nothing to worry about
it.
We are either going to stick up a garage here or get barn/workshop space
within 1/4 mile so storage shouldn't be a problem.
You haven't met Gilly, she is more of a Lara Croft than a Barbie so more
likely to be cammo covered kit. It's my daughters that want the bright pink
car seats, although fortunately they are growing out of it.

Hi Julian,
I will be interested in seeing your ideas on drawer units & water tanks,
that is something I have been planning on doing myself'

Hi Chas,
So far just a mass of ideas, but the main outlines are:
Drawers - use composite as opposed to ply or other wood. Am aiming to get
an Engel 45 or 60l fridge which will sit on the bottom of the boot on a
slider and the draws will go up and over it.
The key thing will be working out what will actually be stored in the draws
and then work from there to determine the number, size and if I'll bother
with putting them on rails.
As for the water tank - ideally aim to put something up and under the
vehicle. If I think my TIG skills are up to it will probably build myself.
If I cannot fit underneath, will aim to build a tank to across the car
behind the 2nd row of seats to fill the triangular gap that the seats
create. Not sure about filling, may end up putting one of the aero style
fuel caps in wing of the car.
With five of us travelling in the car and children being quite time
consuming may well put in two water tanks, one for cold and a smaller one
as a hot water reservoir fed by a heat exchanger from the main tank so that
by the time we get to camp we already have a supply of hot water for
wahing, etc. saving having to wait to heat water up and also avoiding
having to keep the engine running for hot water whilst washing, etc.
The overriding principal for the design of the drawers and water tank is
that I will need to be able to put them in to the car within a day before a
trip and then take them out after a trip.

Julian,
One piece of advice - don't put heavy stuff like fridges, tanks,
behind the rear axle.

Hi Julian,
I built a drawer unit in my previous Landcruiser but unfortunately I haven't
got any pics of it, but it comprised two long drawers, viewed from the back
one on the right and one centre, the rest of the space to the left hand side
was taken up with a high power sound system in a space with a lift up lid.
I didn't have any runners, I just coated the underneath of the drawers with
candle wax, it worked a treat, btw it was all made in plywood so quite
heavy. I'll probably use MDF this time. The unit will be staying in the LC
permanently.
I was thinking of much the same layout but with a water tank taking the
place of the sounds. I hadn't given a lot of thought to the filling of the
tank I was just going to run a hose in to fill it, but the idea of a fuel
filler cap in the wing sounds good, so I think I'll look out for one.
My needs for the drawers are to store off-roading gear so it's not going to
hit me in the back of the head while I'm doing it! I have to admit tho' my
need for a water tank is for cleaning the mud off after a day off-road, I
have just bought a petrol engine powered pressure washer and it works great
using a jerry can of water to feed it so I need a bigger water tank, the
washer pumps out 7 ltrs/min so I reckon at least a 100 ltr tank, I think
there will be more than enough room for that.

Hi Roman,
Yes, in an ideal world you want to keep everything low and between the
axles, but when travelling with 5 of us in the car we cannot use the
space where the 2nd row of seats are for the heavy items so will just
have to make the best of it.
That's why I'm keen to use composites, etc so when I do add weight I
keep it to a minimum. Have even considered doing things like swapping
the bonnet for a fibreglass one to counter the weight of
bumper/winches.

Julian, put me down for a trade with a yummy mummy please. (4WD
enthusiast with a penchant for boats preferred, and of course, not
too athletic and gentle with old men).
(LC content) Engel fridges are expensive, have you come across the
LEC fridges with the Bosch 12 volt compressor? Mucho cheapo compared
with Engel.
Oh and steering racks - I don't know about anyone else, but haven't I
seen one on the Prado?
Cheers

Being a fellow 100 Series owner (Stock) I look forward to your
research/views. How about a blog somewhere on the project?
Anjam

Hi Anjam,
I haven't got the car yet, but when I get it in October/November I will
do a write up on what I do.
BTW - do you have a digital camera? I would like to try and get some
pics of the engine bay from both sides and the front to get an idea of
the amount of space in there.

Julian,
of the engine bay from both sides and the front to get an idea of the amount
of space in there.
I pickup the car from Toyota today. The replcament Air Temp Sensor fixed the
problem it was having. I will take some pictures over the weekend and email
them direct. Both side of engine bay and front of engine bay?
Anjam

Hi Anjam,
Thanks. If I get shots from both sides as well as the front it will
make it easier to guage how much space there is around the engine.
Typically I may end up rejigging the space around the fuel filter as
well as looking to reorganise things at the front of the engine with a
view to possibly fitting (a) a hydraulic pump for a winch and/or (b) an
additional compressor for on board air.
I'm guessing the space at the front will be similar to the 80, pics
will confirm this.
When you send them through direct to [Email address removed], don't
worry about size, etc I don't have any mailbox limits.
