Buying a Landcruiser

hello
i currently own a 1993 model discovery, and to be honest.. im bored with it..
mainly due to the infamous build qualities that landrover have ;)
anyway what i want is the 80 series landcruiser vx (pardon me if i mis-pronounce
the model!)
seen a few on ebay and also on auto trader.
but before i buy one.. can people recommend the following?
1) problems to look out for (visually initially)
2) which gearbox? (man/auto)
3) im looking at 93/94 so what price should i be buying for a decent one.
also i intend on greenlaning with it and presume that it will come with road
tyres.. what tyres do you recommend and what size?
also where do you buy the following for it
1) service items
2) parts
3) accessories
4) offroad protection
remember i come from a landie background and lr shops are plentiful across the
country
thanks in advance

Hi Dyfed,
Welcome to the list, you have come to the right place.
Check all the normal things that you could look for on other vehicles like,
over used tow bar, worn suspension, etc.
There is a very good guide at:
http://www.sleeoffroad.com/newbie/newbie100.htm
Other things to check are:
Exhaust inside right hand wheel arch and where it goes over the rear axle.
There is usually some slack in the drive line, don't worry too much about
that.
If it is a Jap import, check for the front and rear lockers - they are
standard on UK models but rare on Jap imports.
Where are you? You might be able to find someone on the list to come along
and look at one with you - someone who's eyes aren't misted over at the
prospect of the new toy and therefore would be more subjective.
Very much comes down to personal preference. I personally prefer the auto, it
is good and strong and the engine breaking in 2 or L are good enough for
anything you are likely to need it for.
I would have thought ?8-10k, but haven't checked the prices for 6 months or
so.
Ideal alround setup is 285x75x16 BFG AT KOs. If you want to spend some more
money you can find more aggressive MTs that will also play reasonably nicely
on road.
Milner Off Road are pretty good for most things, although it is worth sticking
to toyota stuff for some things.
Having said that I get most stuff from my local motor factors.
Devon4x4, Frogs Island 4x4 - there are several companies that will sell you
the kit, but very few that truly know much about the vehicles. Best bet is to
consult the list before buying anything.

Excellent!!
I live near chorley in lancashire btw.
Mr wildsmith introduced me to this forum (thank you!!)
I was in the donington 4x4 show the other day and saw milner there, and had
a quick flick through, but as the people I was with were also disco owners,
and at the time my decision to buy a LC was between me myself and I, I had
little time to spend on their stand.
Now to find a bargain! :)
