[diff breather]

Hi Guys
I know this may seem a silly question but how do you know if the diff
breathers are working. Its just I was changing the engine oil and filter in
prep for the long trip to France and as I always do was looking around and
saw a pipe coming out of the diff and ending just at the top of the chaisis.
I thought this could not be it as it seemed lower to the ground than what I
thought it would be. I had a look and the dirt caked on around it was a lot.
I cleaned around it and flushed out me eyes aswell. I do not know if it
works and if I was [planning to extent it waht do I have to do exactly, (cut
the pipe, keep the top, rejoin it,
start with a new pipe from the diff}
Thanks

The breather on the front axle can sweat a bit and get a bit gummed up.
It is very easy to remove the breather pipe from the axle and chassis
to clean it and to make sure that the small valve on the end of the
breather is working fine.
Ideally you want to raise the breathers on the Axles, transfer case and
auto box to a point in line with your air intake, so that if you go
wading in water, water doesn't get sucked into the
axles/gearbox/transfer case as they are cooled by the water.
On my 80 I have all the breathers linked together with expansion boxes
at each join and then the final pipe plumbed into the air filter box
with an inline filter of it's own.
