Do I need to flush my AC system?

My AC pump seized when dye was injected to check were the system is leaking. Now i have been considering changing the various components that were leaking including a refurbished pump but have come across recommendations that the AC system needs to be flushed. The reason they say is to ensure that you remove all traces of contaminates caused by the pump seizing. If this is the case then it seems that i will have to take it to a garage for the whole job as every bit of the system which is not being replaced needs to be flushed. Has anyone flushed their AC system after their pump seized? Is it worth doing?

Rob, a job for an auto A/C specialist to check, purge and refill your system properly. and BTW, it's not a 'pump', it's a compressor and compresses the refrigerant gas when it is in the gas stage of the refrigeration cycle. Contamination in the refrig pipework is bad news.

Hope you get it sorted OK. :(

Thanks for the info, im just dreading the cost when i take it to get sorted.

You made me get out my first and second year notes as i thought the term was interchangeable. After a quick search i found that you are correct, pumps and compressors both increase the pressure of a fluid to a higher level of pressure but pumps are used for incompressible fluids (ie liquids) and compressors are used on compressible fluids (ie gas). Also pumps, due to relative fluid incompressibility can also be used to increase head. Its all first year thermodynamics and mechanics of fluids so quite some time ago. :ugeek:

Rob, we're all sure that you passed those subjects with flying colours  Can't say I enjoyed them overly much
