Exhaust advice...

| My exhaust has finally gone, split just above the flexible section and
| rotten elsewhere. As mush as I'd like a 3" stainless system sadly can't
| afford it right now so I just wondered if anyone had experience of Milners
| exhausts (are they just cheap tin?) or if anyone had other ideas. My plan
| is to buy the sections and take the car where it's MOT'd as they can at
| least raise the car, something I can't do on the streets of north London.
It may not be what you want to hear, but when mine went in the same place last October I was advised to replace it with a stock down-pipe from Toyota "because it will fit with no problems" - but I think mainly because they couldn't find a 3rd party down-pipe with flexible joint.
So that's what I got them to do and there were indeed no problems. I only had to replace that first section, and by the sound of it you want to do the whole lot, but here are the prices from the bill (before VAT):
- down-pipe with flexible section (includes 1st silencer box) =A3174.16
- 2 new gaskets about =A37
- 3 bolts =A34.65.
So the total parts cost from Toyota for that 1st section will be around =A3213 including VAT - assuming prices of last Oct remain the same.
It might be worth going 3rd party for the rear section(s), but if you want to keep that flexible section - which Toyota must have had a reason for adding - I think you'll have to stick to OEM for the first bit.
Sorry, not a total answer, but I hope this helps a bit when comparing prices.

That's not what they told me, but I didn't argue. I think they were
worried mainly about potential problems fitting to the turbo, and I
can't say I blame them - any damage there would be mega expensive!
How much is the Milner's equivalent? I'd be tempted if it were 1/2 the
price, but otherwise I'd be inclined to go OEM for that section.

Hi Jeremy
Just last week I had the same problem with my crusier.
The exhaust broke above the flexy joint completely in half. I know why the
flexy joint is there now because the two pieces of the pipe were out of line
with each other by about a 1/2.
I replaced it with Toyota exhaust part at 240euro and fitting which came to
350euro in total.
Some time back I did replace the rear section with Milners and so far it
seems fine
But this time I had to go Toyota because of the sound coming from the
little bit of exhaust still attached to the engine which was quite loude
even when driving easy.
Funny thing is a while ago on the list we were talking about the advantages
of the bigger exhaust 3" compared to what we have as standard and the fact
that it would provide less restriction and so and back pressure which should
be better for performance.
With the exhaust broken where it was there was no restriction at all but yet
I could not detect any difference in performance at all, only about 12" of
pipe coming out of the manifold.

My Downpiipe cracked a while ago=2C and the prices for parts from Milners just didn't stack up- on close examination i reckoned a full system was prety much needed. By the time i had got round to it the whole exhaust had split- it sounded brilliant on full charge but was rediculously noisy- it was also underpowered and uneconomical.

After searching for a good long whicl i came across a place in cardiff called pro speed exhausts- had been recommended by a number of tuners (ie the type that aren't into barry boy Corsa's). can' remember the guys name=2C but he was amazing- a truly gifted tradesman- he used full stainless to make me a 2.5" exhaust (i'm not sure about the benefits of 3"- you need some backpressure with a turbo unless you just want top end power)- he built the whole lot in about 40 minutes=2C he even made the silencer from scratch- rolled it froma singl e piece of stainless sheet into a perfect cylinder.

He fitted the exhaust down between the chassis rail and the gearbox=2C and the tailpipe exits under the vehicle. The truck sounds good=2C goes well and i have a guaranteed for life exhausts- its still shiney under the mud=2C 12 months later

I just got a quote from pro-speed exhausts - =A3400 for a short side
exit exhaust and =A3500 for a full system

That was an all in price- it was a bit cheaper than he started at because i let him get on with another customers job whilst i waited=2C and we had a good natter too which always helps. Price was all in for labour=2C supply and fitting. It's cheap because it doesn't take him very long because he's so good at it- the owner (charlie iirc)=2C does the bends and tack welds everything up and he has a chap who just does all the welding.

Exhaust comes with a lifetime guarantee too which i beleive is transferable between owners.

I spoke to quite a lot of exhaust places and he was the only one that impressed me!
