First post - and my first Toyota

Further on down the line, if the film funding gods smile on me, I'd like to
put Michelin 7.50 x 16's on (either XZL or XZY) but not knowing anything
about Toyota's I have no clue what the original rims would have been on the
HJ60 - can you get simple old fashioned steel rims for it?

Darrin, welcome.
Can't help you much with the rim issue, my 80 runs on 16 inch steel
split rims, but they are apparently part of my military spec to allow
the tyres to run flat in an emergency. But luckily I don't get
involved in too many shoot-outs ;-)
As for Michelins. If you want to commit immediately, COSTCO are
running a 20% off Michelin offer for every 4 tyres bought till 31
May. They only trade in Michelins from stock and they do stock 15 and
16 inch 4X4 tyres. Any tread pattern they do not have in stock will
be acquired within a day. They already have low prices and the extra
offer seems good. You are in the London area and it might be easy for
you to go to their Watford head office depot alongside the A41 near
the M1 J5 Watford turn. (Also at Chingford & Thurrock though). If
you are not a member then I can meet you there and you can use my
account - but you can't use a credit card. I need to go there in the
very near future so it would be a good fit and I am not far away from
Watford - even this weekend. You can find them on the web and give
them a call to find out what they are offering. (They also trade
BFG's and a limited range of others). If you want to do it then hit
me off-list or call 07770 43 10 43.

Cheers for the reply and kind offer Jon. I'll put 7.50 x 16's on
eventually - I just need something to run about with in the meantime
whilst funds are low.
Attached is a pic of a HJ60 with XZL's - anybody have any idea what
rims they have, and are they simple and strong?

Darrin,
The rims are most likely the eigh white spoke type, also called
Mangels. They are simple and inexpensive. As for strength - max load
1134kg / 2500lb, sightly less than the max load of a BFG tyre.

Eight spoke, white, simple and inexpensive as Roman says. I have them at the
moment and haven't managed to break one yet. I have them with BFGs which
also seem to be good. Haven't managed to break one of those either. I got 6
wheels and tyres from a place near Northampton and I cannot for the life of
me remember the name but will do when I get to my computer at home.

HDJ81 with the usual suspects.

Thanks Roman, would they be the best option in the simple, tough and
cheap field for overlanding?

Darrin,
I've seen them used on many landcruisers.
You can make Hilux steel rims fit (at least on the 80 series) but they
are too narrow. Split rims are a pig to balance, if at all. So there
isn't much choice.

So where can I get 8 x 16 cheap steel rims from? I can only find 8 x 15 or 7
x 16 sizes. I only need one rim to put a spare tyre on and I can't find a
2ndhand alloy one anywhere.
A white steel 8x16 8-spoke would do admirably.
Anyone know where to find one with an 80 stud pattern?
