Frog 4x4 Exhaust woes

Well was never going to be easy was it????
Exhaust never turned up till yesterday afternoon Tuesday despite being promised for Monday. The guys struggled to get the old one off and apparently it was a mess, full of carbon and rusting away badly. But guess what the new one does not fit!! They tried hard but were unable to marry up the mounting brackets for the front down pipe so will now have to fabricate a new mount for it and possibly the other mounting points too.
Not happy at all so I called JJ who could offer no comfort except to collect the exhaust and to give me a refund. Not much good to me with a car I can't drive, and old system I can't put back on. Have to say the system is not that good. The welds look poor and there is what looks like rust on it already?? Didn't think stainless rusted?? Wrong it's not rust, its tarnish and spatter from the welding? The powerflow boxes were nice and shiny though! So car has failed its mot, I can't drive it and it will take another three hours at =A340hr to get it to fit. Exhaust came with no gaskets, no nuts or bolts but thankfully the boys saved the originals.
Feel very hacked off.
All the best

Sorry to hear you had so many problems Simon, all I can say is my system
from Frogs Island fitted with no trouble at all. I did query with JJ the
lack of bolts and gaskets and he said use the old ones, I thought for that
price ?493.5 inc VAT they could have included a few bolts.
The finish on all the components was good with nothing that looked like rust
on it, it sounded fine and I was pleased to have an exhaust that is very
'tucked away' underneath the car with less chance of damage when I go
off-roading.

Hey Simon
Im very sorry to hear about your exhaust.
Its good you share this with the group.
I think thats very poor really , I would have thought that the exhaust
would have had pass some sort of test at some stage to actually fit what it
was suppossed to fit.
I was on the brink of getting one myself from them and only at the last
minute did I decide to go for the 3 inch pipe when I do need to get it done.
Geese im glad I stopped short of buying this one from frogs.
I weighted it all up cause when I do I will have to travel to the Uk which
will involve accomadation, ferry and all the spending money that goes along
with that and a wife and kids.
So I reakon it will be a weekend job when it happens.
So I really cant afford to make mistakes cause in the past it can work out a
tad expensive because of shipping charges.
I was on to frogs last week regarding a steering damper and steering
correction bushings.
I was told they were out but they would be in toutch with in a day or two.
I waited untill this morning and no contact so ordered from TBRUK instead.
Ill have them next week, so now the fun starts to get someone to fit them ,
but of course there is my yaris guy or someone else who will huff and pand
and stratch his head trying his best to find a way to rip me off with O
thats a tricky/ difficuly/ long/ specialised/ job etc etc etc.
cheers

Hi Lubo,
Horsepower is easy to make, reliable for 100 of thousands of km's is a
different story, I ran a Toy 3B at 175hp for over 150,000km and it was
no worse the wear for it up from it's original 90hp. Would I reccomend
other people try no, as unless you know how to look after it you are
pushing the engine beyond it's realstic limit's.
I recently dynoed a 1HD-T that was intercooled with a large
free-floating turbo for a boat and we were getting 315hp and about a bit
over 650ftlb's of torque with 45psi boost at full load the EGT's were
fine and the mixture's good but I would not dream of running that setup
in a road vehicle.
Running a big bore exhaust system will not make horsepower directly but
it will often allow an engine to make power more easily. A std cruiser 2
3/8" exhaust system at full load and relatively high rpm has nearly 5psi
of back pressure which does not hurt power directly but it does increase
crossover pressure between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust system.
By swapping to a 3" system (3 1/2" dump pipes, that bolt on in place of
the stock cast iron outlet, that smoothly taper to 3" outlet are readily
commercially available) backpressure will drop to around 1.5psi which
results in lower EGT's and quicker turbo spool up.
The 1HD-T injectors in stock form are being pushed pretty hard thermally
so pushing up the combustion load without intercooling is courting
injector failure hence piston failure soon there after.
Cheers,
Craig.
