I’m all for a challenge and a bit of excitement in a job, but that’s a bit beyond my sphincter threshold....

I assume if they touch the cables nothing happens as they are not earthed.

That’s it, they use the lance to equalise the potential to prevent arc burns. Touching earth would be certain death. I’d need a nappy under that suit.

Reminds me of when I threw a copper wire over the 440 KV national grid....and lived without a scratch but no trousers or shoes left. What a dreadful noise that made.
