Help re centre console

Hello all
Another question...
My car has a fridge/cooler in the centre console which is a bit useless
really and I want to replace it with a lockable, safe/oddments storage box.
Storage in the passenger cabin is pretty poor compared to newer cars. It
seems though that the cooler is run from the aircon system and to remove it
will mean draining the aircon with all that implies, terminating the pipes
that come into the centre console and then somehow finding or building a
unit that will be useful and will accommodate things like GPS etc etc when
on short stops.
Would like to know if anyone has experience of this, how easy is it, are
there good cubby boxes out there as there are for LRs and Discos etc, would
it be best to make one up, (expensive). I know it is best to get the aircon
done by someone who knows, and it may need looking at anyway, but would like
to hear from all who may be able to shed light...
Many thanks
Jeremy

Jeremy,
Can't help with the fridge decomissioning as I've never had such a
luxury item in my LC, but as far as the cubby box goes, I was assured
by Footloose4x4 they can get me one from SA. I ordered it, but it
turned out that this cubby box could fit any vehicle but certainly not
an '80.
Finally, I decided it's better to keep it then modify it for my needs
than build one from scratch. Unless I was supplied with a wrong item,
or there's a supplier somewhere I've never heard of before, you will
probably face the same choice.

Hi Jeremy,
In theory I think you should have a specialist AirCon guy (or girl) in
to remove the gas safely for you - you will certainly need them in to
re-gas the aircon system for you afterwards.
If you are looking for a lockable cubby, your best bet will be to make
something for yourself. LCs in the UK have a two stage cubby and
armrest there as standard that incorporates vents for the rear heater,
although they aren't lockable - you might be able to pick one up when
you see an LC being scrapped.
With regards removal, you are most likely to find out more from our
Aussie friends since they have them almost as standard. Either try the
main 80s list or if you like I could ask for you on the 80_Aus list.

Thanks Roman. I've been looking into getting something made but it will cost
both arms, both legs ++, money I should probably spend on a few tanks full
of diesel. Would have been nice though...

Jeremy,
Have a look at the LCOOL technical pages, one of the features
there is a centre cubby box built by one of the members, I think it
was George Couyant (?).

Thanks for this Julian. I've had a quick look on the Lcool site but not much
there. I will get an aircon specialist to drain and regas when the time
comes but I would quite like to get a decent box in by september when we are
off to N Africa for 3 months. Got a bit of time to either find something or
save up to get something made.
Cheers
