HZJ75

Thanks to Julian, Jon and Dave for all that useful info,
should have mentioned that it is an Aus Import, and that it is manual.
I also have reservations about the turbo, but it is on so maybe let the sleeping dogs etc. The hubs are manual and likely to stay that way for now.
Haven't bought it yet but have always heard good things about tlc reliability and durability. I have had pick-ups and land rovers various in the past - I work as a forester- and they have been either too lightweight, or I have been irritated by the constant weekends and evenings spent 'adjusting' and tinkering needed to get to work the next day !
Anyway, cheers for now

OK Nick, Oz imports are rare, but it figures as its the usual bush taxi for
the third world (so why do we have them in Bosnia?) (Sorry Ozzies!!)
Anyway, I would be surprised if they have coils on the front, more likely
cart springs. Though Toy seemed to have kept the marque in production
a long time cos of the bush taxi business, and they changed odd bits and
pieces that they were using on the other models. A friend of mine supplying
oil camps in the Sahara was buying new 75's in the Spring.
Keep the manual hubs. In my work there are often times in summer when I
want low ratio climbing hard rock roads and don't want 4WD. Maybe
applicable to forests too.

Hi Jon,
Does this mean that you engage 4L and unlock the hubs? I thought that this
would damage the hubs, no? Certainly, I used to have an HZJ77 (jap spec
LWB 70 with 1HZ engine) and the manual advised against doing this.
Maybe 'm barking up the wrong tree through.
Dead jealous about someone having a 75 in the UK. My dream cruiser - especially
the troopie version.
Cheers,
Andy

Andy please let me sleep in blissful ignorance !!
Never had a book for my 80, and I do what most others do. Yes at times I
travel hard rock roads that are steep inclines over bare strata about 2-4
ins deep, so they are ridged almost like a staircase. But there is
virtually no loose stuff for the transmission to get rid of wind-up. So its
best to put the hubs out of gear and run in low. After several years of
doing this on my 80, other office 80's and 75 troopies, oh yes and hi-luxes
and my old 4 runner, I have had no problem. Maybe its wrong according to
the book.
But rather that than use the 'permanent 4WD' and no low ratio in an office
RAV4 which we daren't take onto the mountains for this reason. God bless
the old Land Rover transmission with 4WD selectable over both ratio ranges.
As for a 75 troopie as your dream vehicle, you won't think that after a
few hundred miles of tarmac, the leaf springs are rather vomit inducing -
stick with the coilers !
Cheers
Jon - now out on those steep roads for the next 2 days.

Yeah, that might be the only thing, my 77 had leafs all round and used
to yaw quite a bit on twisty roads. I think the 78 with the coils at
the front might be the way to go - esp the posher of the Oz versions
with the 1HDFTE motor.
Aaah one day.
In the meantime I'll stick with my 160, I mean 2 80s. :)
Sorry to have worried you about the hubs. If they are okay, then the
book is obviously over-cautious - very common I think,
Cheers,
Andy

Hi folks,
I'm struggling with a vehicle search and the framno url (http://framno.narod.ru/ ) sent to me by Jon, as they ask for the 17 character VIN number, but the one on the car and the log book is only 12 !
Any help much appreciated

Hi Nick,
What info are you trying to find?
There are several people on the list here with EPCs (Electronic Parts Catalogues) that might be able to help.
Failing that I will see what I can do when I get back.
Cheers,
Julian
