My 80 is having its CV joints replaced today, and the chap stripping it
down has just rung to say that a differential crown wheel tooth fell out
of the axle when he dismantled the right hand side seal!

Hopefully it's a leftover from a previous failed crown wheel repair, but
I've a nasty feeling that it isn't....

HI Chris,
I woulld be interested to know how he is changing the CV joint if he is getting crown wheel teeth falling out - for changing the CV you go in at the hub, steering knuckle - for a crown wheel tooth to fall out of there it would have needed to come past the inner axle seal resulting in a right old mess.
I suggest that you go back to him and get him to clarify what is happening.
Would it help if I chatted to him?

Sorry, I wasn't very clear in what I said. I asked them to fit new
seals, so he will have pulled out the old one and he said that the tooth
was just inside that at the end of the axle - or at least I think that's
what he said. Presumeably with the axle shaft and seal out there is
room for odd bits & pieces (!) to fall out.
I always thought that there was only one oil seal (on each side) at the
outer end of the axle, and that the axle assembly was full of oil. Are
you saying that there is an "inner" seal (next to the differential) and
an "outer" seal (next to the CV joint)? If so it would indeed have made
a right old mess had it come through the former.
Mr Haynes isn't very clear about the layout, but I don't think there is
an "inner" seal (in my terminology). At least I hope there isn't!
If he sounds confused then I may ask him to ring you for advice; but he
didn't sound panicky, just surprised. He is going to inspect the
differential for damage, but he hasn't come back to me yet, so my credit
card and I are still hoping that the "previous injury" theory holds
good!
More news when I have it.

The seal at the end of the axle, within the 'ball' is referred to as the
'inner axle seal'.
When you remove the half shaft and then remove the seal there is a small
lip on the inside of the axle intended to ensure that there is some oil
near the seal to keep it libricated.
It's interesting if there is actually a tooth caught in there, must be a
small fragment and am surprised that you haven't seen any fragments of
metal on the drain plug of the diff.
It is worth noting that the welding around this lip just inside the seal is
often pretty crap and I have found bits breaking off when cleaning.
Does he still have the diff oil - what condition was it in?

I didn't drain it. It was last done about 3 years ago and they didn't
mention anything then, but maybe they didn't look.

Maybe that's what it was. I find it hard to believe that I wouldn't
have felt any regular clonks from a missing tooth but, as he pointed
out, the gears mesh with several teeth at once so perhaps one wouldn't
feel anything.

Dunno, but I'll ask - still no news and I don't want to hassle him yet.

Nope! And I'm not repentant either. I don't deep wade it or hammer the
transmission, so why shouldn't the diff oil last 5 years or more?

Maybe you will be lucky and its nothing serious? I know when I dismantled mine there was all sorts of sludge and crude in the axle and some bits of metal but no teeth just what looked like the remains of machining something. I too never changed the diff oil till last year and the stuff that came out was just disgusting. I was glad to have done it but it needs doing again now as the drivers side is weeping oil and there is a knocking from both sides when going around a very tight downhill bend in 1st.

Well, an update on this - fortunately a happy one.

(1) The tooth was *outside* the seal! And no, he has no idea how it got
there - presumeably a sloppy mechanic in the past. Hopefully it was
held there by some grease and didn't go whizzin' round damaging things.

As far as I am aware only the local Toyota dealer has had that right
knuckle off in the past as I had to have the seals replaced when I first
bought it, and vehicle came with a full Toyota service history. As our
US friends would say "go figure".


(2) The differential has been inspected and is absolutely fine - thank
God. So the British Dental Association (mechanical division) can stand
down their emergency squad.


Regarding your symptoms Simon: I too got a knocking on tight turns in
low gear - very noticeable on alpine passes! Likewise when pulling away
from a standstill with lock on (loud enough to make pedestrians turn &
look), or when manoeuvring the trailer into our barn (uphill, in
reverse, in low range).

I'll check out my old CV joints' condition, which must be in pretty much
the same state as yours, and see if I can get an estimate on how far
they were from failure. Hopefully that will give you an idea about how
urgent your repairs are or aren't.

Incidentally how are your injectors / pump / performance after their
enema?

OK if it's synthetic ... else a yearly purge is better.

Service, that will depend on if you do lots of short journeys or just not
mileage at all. Some new vehicles have variable service indicators that
look at the usage and decide when a service is due, with a low mileage and
reasonable runs those systems will often allow you to do 20% more mileage or
over 12 months.
Don=92t forget the service should be about more than fluid and filter changes.
I imagine your LC has grease points on the drive shaft etc and grease will
sometimes harden over a couple of years. Service is also a chance to get
the rubber parts like brake flexiables and radiator hoses looked at so you
have some warning if they are perished.
I would go for yearly, particularly on an older vehicle.

We seem to have strayed a long way from mechanical dentistry!
The answer to your question depends on the email programme that you are
using. The most common is Outlook Express in which you could do:
- Click on Addresses (icon on top bar)
- Scroll down to "[Email address removed]"
- Right click on that line, and select "Properties"
- Select the "Name" tabs
- Check the box that says "Send E-Mail using plain text only"
This means that all emails going to the ELCO list will be in plain text,
but you will still be free to send emails to other people in whatever
format you wish.
If you are using a different email programme let us know & I'm sure
someone will be able to advise you, but most offer the same facility
that allows you to restrict sending to specified destinations to plain
text only.

Hi Chas,
Actually the culprit seems to be Reno - all his messages are still html
formatted.
Unless you have the address in the addressbook setup to send messages as Text,
if you reply to an HTML message, you mail program will automatically format
the reply in HTML.
Having said that Chas, you still need to learn to trim your messages so don't
end up quoting the whole of the message you are replying to.
Go to http://www.landcruisers.info and follow the links to the page about list
rules, etc - well worth a read ;-))

I do trim what I think is necessary, I know there have been occasions that
I should have trimmed more but in the excitement of replying I forget! and I
hate it when I read someone else's mail with very little to let me know what

Usually it is best to trim everything and then only quote the bits you are
commenting on.
If you are struggling to keep track of the messages, search your mail program's
help for 'Mail Rules' or 'filters' - it's pretty straight forward to setup a
folder for the ELCO messages and then have all the messages to and from the
list filtered into it and thus easier to track when viewed in 'conversation'
view.

Ignore previous mail, I pressed the wrong button,
Julian, some people have answered without any reference to what they are
replying to, it can be very confusing. I do already have an ELCO folder set
up, I belong to three other Yahoo groups and it would be utter mayhem if
they weren't all separated, plus of course any other incoming mails. I
haven't yet tried viewing messages 'in conversation' so maybe I should give
it a go. BTW Is there any way of signing off ones emails without getting a
digital signature?
