Improved Performance from extra fuel pump on Diesels

I have just been following a thread on another list where they are
talking about adding an extra electric fuel pump at the tank end to
push the fuel to the engine.
The benefits appear to be:
1. better turbo response
2. no air in fuel lines
3. no white smoke from exhaust
4. no problems with very cold starts
5. better shifting in automatic transmission
This is in conjunction with adding additional 'cyclone' style bowl
filters.
Anyone here tried/considered it?

Jullian,
You probably know that I' have a Pierburg electric pump but I am yet to find
out about all these benefits. Maybe I am not concentrated enough while driving
to appreciate better turbo response or improved shifting in automatic
transmission. The fact is that there's no smoking and the engine never fails to
start first time. If someone can tell that it does make a difference in the
other areas, I'd like to know, too.

Guys
I'd be very concerned about blowing the seals in the injection pump. I once
pushed the hand priming pump in after the engine had started on my Hilux.
The seal around the throttle shaft immediately started leaking , and had to
be replaced- very fiddly job as it meant top off the pump.

Hi, It is me , I installead Walbro last time.
As I wrote on DTLC I had problems with air in fuel line,
I could observe it in line between fuel filter and injection pump
(transparent line).
Even engine running there was air and more air when RPM higher, I think
inner pump with injection pump could not suck fuel from tank,
with this reason white smoke was and problems with starting after some days,
probably bad working injection pump.
I think additional walbo gave injection to normal operating mode,
not totaly wrong, what gave my car better response

Hello Pawel,
So you went down this path, too. Which Walbro pump did you fit and where did
you get it from? Did you put it in the tank or in-line?

Dave,
I don't know about the Hilux injection pump, but I've heard quite a few
stories about problems with the lift pump inside the Denso 096000-6420
injection pump failing due to low fuel supply pressure. The seal in your pump
would probably faiil anyway.

I think that I might have slightly over egged the benefits, however I
believe there are some, particularly if you consider fitting extra
filters in the fuel line.
With regards blowing the seals, the trick is to get a pump that you can
set the pressure on - I believe the recommendation is to use a Walbro
pump that enables you to do this.
Craig Vincent in NZ has been doing a lot of work in this area, but I am
yet to find detailed writeups from him.

Hi,
Have you seen any write up on the subject from him?
There is a guy in Poland who has recently done the mod, I'll try to
find out more info.

Roman,
Craig Vincent sent pump to me from NZ, in europe I could not find.
The pump is like this http://www.gbmarketing.co.nz/walbro.htm
I installed it in-line near tank. If somebody are interesting I have
detailed drawings and instructions given me by Craig.

Julian,
I did the digging but couldn't find a Walbro seriess 6000 supplier in Europe.
AFAIK Walbro is now part of TI Automotive (EU HQ are in France) and the market
for some products is geographically segmented. In Europe they market the
Pierburg brand.

You can certainly get other Walbro pumps in the UK, so suspect with a
bit of digging will be able to find a UK supplier.

Julian - on a more serious note than my last post have a look at the Carter 4070 fuel pump. http://www.racetep.com/webfuelspark.html#webfuel the comments here appear to make some sense. Note that they run at 4 psi. One proviso though - suitability for diesel fuel would have to be confirmed. Incidentally the race tep site as a whole looks interesting.

Gareth,
There's plenty of fuel pumps around, but only a few brands/types are designed
for diesel engined cars. 4 psi is way too low for 1HD-T. Working pressure of
10psi is about right.
