Hi Andy,

Definitely one to file away for future reference in case I add to the LC
collection here, thanks for sharing and what a strange procedure to
program the key!

Best Regards,
Jon.

Subject: [ELCO] In case you need to get a second key or remote.....
Hi All,
I recently bought a new ignition key and remote for my '97 GX 80 as it
only came with one and I was terrified what might happen if I lost it
(new locks, security ECU the works...). I therefore got a new blank
(=A335) and a new remote (about =A355) from my local Toyota dealer. Then I
paid =A34 to have the key cut. Then they told me that I'd need to pay =A360
plus vat to have the remote and the key (late keys have a transponder in
their head) programmed. Being an inveterate skinflint, I tried to find
out how to program the new remote and key myself and, after kissing a
lot of frogs, I'm happy to report how to do it - in case anyone else is
in a similar position.
These instructions are good for 80s with the TVSS IIIb security system
(i.e. the later ones). I don't know if the remote programming sequense
might also work for the earlier System 5000.
1) Adding a remote.
a) Remove centre console (3 bolts)
b) Locate the three TVSS boxes. There are two small ones (one with a
dial which detects window breakage via pressure change, and another of
unknown function that is cable tied to the carpet) - ignore these. You
are interested in the third, bigger box. Pull this box up - it's stuck
down with strong sticky goo and undo the small screw that hold the metal
shield over the cable entry part of the box. You should then be able to
pivot up the shield. You'll see a row of dip switches - ignore these -
and a small green button.
c) Turn the ignition on (but don't start the car)
d) Hold the green button on the TVSS box down for more than 2 seconds
e) The red alarm light (usu in the dash or in the gearbox console) will
come on for 5 seconds. Within this time, press both buttons on your new
remote simulaneously - just for a second or so. This, amazingly, will
programme the remote.
2) Adding a new key.
This is even stranger. I found dozens of variation on this on the web,
but only this one works. You have to follow the instructions exactly.
a )Open driver's door and insert programmed black key into ignition (you
can't use the grey 'valet' key to do this). Close door.
b). Within 15 seconds
Switch ignition on and off 4 times.
Switch ignition on.
Open and close the driver's door.
c). Within 20 seconds
Open and close driver's door 5 times.
Remove key from ignition.
d). Within 10 seconds
Insert black key to be programmed into ignition (i.e. the new key).
Switch on and leave for 1 minute.
Remove key.
(Repeat step 3 for further keys)
To exit programming open and close the driver's door.
Anyway, I thought I'd share these as it will save you frustration time
on the web if it's ever something you need to do. Both the above worked
for me - over =A365 saved. Laugh? I almost did.
cheers - Andy
