injector nozzle removal

Does anyone have experience removing the Injector Nozzles on a 1HD - FTE engine. I have removed the injector holder seals, removed the bolt and washer holding the nozzle holder clamp to the cylinder head and tried pulling the nozzle up by hand! They look like they might be a bit delicate, do they require an SST?

Hi Jon

I've been looking at the FSM too, I'm guessing that they are a bit stuck, but didn't want to take any risks. Also trying to find another car quickly

Got the injectors out in the end. They needed a lot of coaxing... fitted an M6 machine screw and levered out! Anyway they're not delicate, so can take a good tug!

Well, I got my truck back together this evening after an intake overhaul and injector service.

There's a huge difference in the tone of the engine at idle and when driving. Gone is the awful rattling when cold. It sounds like a new car inside the cabin!
Peformance wise I'm feeling about 5% more power but a huge difference in how the power is delivered. It was suffering from weird behaviour in the gear shifts which is totally gone. The gear changes are smooth and the power is delivered evenly. Seems to want to keep on going too. looking forward to getting her on the motorways tomorrow.

My injectors were filthy and the intake was a real mess. Nice and clean now.

In short I'm very happy. Well worth it.

Weirdly... my injectors were tested and had a perfect spray pattern! Problem turned out to be gunked pump internals. Can anyone tell me how to attach a pic of the I.P.'s internal filter? Anyway need to wait a couple of weeks for parts. Decided to fit a new tensioner and tensioner pulley, cambelt, all new gaskets, injector seals etc. plus a ton of other jobs like rear wheel bearing, upper / lower suspension bushes and take carpets out and give them a proper clean.

I add pics by loading them up to photobucket or similar. Then you get the url from photobucket and paste it in here.

I'd be interested in finding out whether your pump quitens down after you've worked on it. It's the single noisiest item in my engine bay.

I'm loath to go near the pump due to the timing issue. I've never gone near a timing belt or anything running from it.
I generally stay away from anything that can have a catastrophic outcome.

You doing the rear shock bushings? Mine are knocking but I hear the rear tops are right btards to get to. Exhaust box off etc.

Ref the IP i'll let you know (although the truck was fairly quiet for a LC TD until it started to run rough)... But the timing belt on LC is the easiest timing belt I've ever done and I've done a few - mostly petrols!

I've also made a tool to push out the IP (which you are welcome to borrow). The IP has a taper fit to it's pulley or the timing case - can't remember which, but it's impossible to remove without a tool.

With regards to IP timing; there are matchmarks on the body of the pump that align to the timing gear casing and a notch on the IP pulley that aligns to a notch on the cam pully. The crank has an internal chain so that the position of the crank vs. the pump is fixed. If the matchmarks on the ip body don't line up, you just remark them. I'm on my 2nd IP removal, cambelt etc in 11 months - fairly confident with it now.

Perhaps collaborate over the shock bushes, I'll also be doing the drop links and bushes in the upper & lwr front wishbones. Best to join another thread for that!

Thanks for the instructions on attachments.

Hey Nathanrobo,

Wheres the filter on the IP? Can it be got to readily?

Cheers,
Ken.

(fitted my Tunit today - not exactly lifting off .... will whack it up to 9 tomorrow and see what happens)

Not sure, you could ring Keith at TT Automotive. Below... link to a pic of said item (not sure if it works - my first time using photobucket):

Cheers nr.

I'm still a little miffed at the way my truck is driving after my injector and intake work. Even with the tunit at 8 she's not pulling like she used to. Odd. All I can think is that the specialists didn't service the injectors correctly. The nozzles were replaced and looked very good but its possible they did something incorrect with the innards.

I also had some of the washers stuck in the head which may be causing a pressure leak. I think I need to open her up again.

Did the injector people have the kit to test dual stage injectors? - most don't and some will just swap nozzles (not necessary in most cases) in the hope that it resolves the problem.

We use a long M8 bolt to get the washers in - screw it into the washer and then you can edge it out. It's essential to swap the washers (although I have heard of some people resurfacing them with fine sand paper) - I have come across a couple of instances where they weren't swapped and leaked.

Hi Julian

Can you describe what this dual stage test is? Not a scubie as to whether the firm I used do this?

Can concur about the washers which were a pig to get out. But get them out is a must! Also worth cleaning out the ports prior to putting in new seals.

The injectors are dual pressure, not 100% sure how they technically operate, but know that few companies can test them properly and it is easy to test the main crack off pressure which all firms should be able to do, but if the second pressure isn't right it can lead to a lot of running problems.

.... neglecting to reattach one of the vacuum hoses can also lead to problems ....

Suffice it to say that my truck is now running very well indeed !

That's the thing with the 100s there are plenty there and they do have a habit of hiding

Thanks Julian... could be useful to compile a list of companies that can competenly provide the 2 stage test! As mentioned I haven't got a clue as to wether the firm I used do this. I'm not sure whether I should be refitting them??

Put it back together over the last couple of weeks. Fired it up today, sounds great and seems to go well!
