John Byrne the story

John
I have followed your various trials and tribulations with your cruiser over the months with great interest - and truly admire your patience and perseverance. I cant help thinking and thought I would enquire - would it not be easier to just spend a little more on a slightly newer/better cruiser? I appreciate that's not the point - but as a very unmechanically minded person I guess the challenge is too great for me and therefore I adopt the path of least resistance.
Anyway Merry Christmas to one and all
Mark

Hi Reno
for the first time dare I to disagree with you.
My LC(HDJ80 1HD-FT) has 243000km on the clock-if it is true- but I got
message from toyota dealer that my IP should be overhaul(after a big
investigation they found out even that the problem I experience occurs in
France). My modest opinion is that if someone should overhaul IP after
240000km-that is VERY BAD for diesel car and worst for 'toyota'one...
cheers
Lubo

I beg to disagree. Unless our brother John owns a lemon, it would be best
to bite the bullet and learn how to fix it, or find a good mechanic in whom
he can trust to maintain his 80. There is no panacea in newer vehicles, but
yes in vehicles that have seen much better maintenance. Example; would you
rather figure out a fuel injection anomaly in an 80's 1HDT-FT or its
electronic cousin in an hdj100?

John Byrne the story and the IP in general

Oh man Reno
here you make me smile again(I knew it):
<You'd be better off installing a Wal-boro pusher pump by the tank instead
of letting those knuckle-dragging Toyota wrenches "overhaul" your IP.>
that's exactly what I intend to do-just wait for the right Walbro model(FRB)
to be ready through January :))
cheers

PS take good care of yourself-many people don't make it through the
night....too much fat food at Xmass time...

Oh man Lubo I feel your pain. I imagine that our 2002 Toyota Previa D4-D
will wind up requiring IP or variable-geometry turbo work soon enough.
But what other vehicle than an 80 could haul your hind in such style and
have its IP last even 243k Km? Sure, my 1988 Benz 300TD had 350k Km on its
Bosch IP, but Bosch had been perfecting that IP since the 60s. In the 90s
they went to high pressure common rail injection and now even Bosch
injections fail every 100k Km or so.
You'd be better off installing a Wal-boro pusher pump by the tank instead of
letting those knuckle-dragging Toyota wrenches "overhaul" your IP.
And yes I am here to agree with you 100% on this frosty post-Christmas
evening, we have all the typical IP problems in France also. But we eat
better. Just tonight I ate roast duck legs with organic brown rice and
fresh organic winter salad greens with roquefort/munster salad dressing.
Yum. Burp. Sorry!
