LC buying guide on eBay

yep and with the late 60 series - some of which (Imports I think though - don't think it was available on the UK models) had the 12HT engine.

interestingly lumped in the iron Pig with the 40/45 when it's more of a predecessor of the 60.

Also forgets the later 3 Litre 70 series of which there are quite a few about.

And as for the comments about the Hilux - well a bit dismissive of a great truck - they may get abused but they are strong and the UK 2.4 is a pretty strong motor tending not to suffer from the cracked heads the import Turbos do - that being said it's slower than hell.

Still not a bad attempt though.

He writes - "I'm not going to say much about Hiluxes , except to say that most of them have been used as work vehicles , often on construction sites plus hard motorway driving on the weekend run home , so they have sometimes had a right old bashing . The 2.4 litre engine is notably weaker than the 2.8 litre version , and best avoided . Fuel consumption can be pretty scary . Personally I wouldn't buy an older Hilux at all , but it's up to you , you might be lucky"

His facts are wrong on the hilux pickup too. The information he gives is for the surf. The 2.4 and 2.4td engines from the pickup series are one of the most reliable engines toyota have made. The surf engine reliability issues stemmed from them taking a 2.4 engine and bolting a turbo to it without modifying the head enough for the extra heat and pressure.

Oh and I would rather have the fuel consumtion of a Hilux than a Mitubishi L200 ;)

Well said.

And actually having owned a Surf and had the head go on it, I still think the 2L engine is a hell of an engine with a bottom end that is strong beyond belief. Yes the heads crack but then it's an old head design that had an EGR put on it when it wasn't designed for it, the original 2LT and 2LTE heads were too thin in the important places and the exhaust is too small to get the heat away quick enough. That being said you can make one hell of an engine bolting on the head from a 3L and using the turbo and inlet from a 2LTE and sticking a 3 inch exhaust on it and while you are at it block of the EGR and thow it in the nearest round filing cabinet.

Now a 60 series with a 12HT or an Iron Pig are a couple of trucks I would really like. Mind you can't fault his comment that an 80 series is a good value buy, mind you it's getting to the point where a 100 is even better value as the 80 prices seem to be quite strong at the moment (wish I hadn't sold mine a year ago).

I also know of quite a few Surf 2.4s that have never had any problems some do seem to be lucky. Fact is the Taliban Van (Hilux) is probably the most reliable truck ever made, plenty of them out there justify that point and the fact that Africa is awash with them (and most of the world's war zones too) proves they are a truck you can rely on. If I was in the market for a pickup, nothing else would even come close on the wish list (apart from maybe an old F150) because if I liked having to fix vehicles rather than playing with them then I'd buy a Land Rover.

1993 Hilux twin cab 3L owner for 11 + years

I would buy another brand new if I could, I don't need a Turbo I'm happy to potter along.

Now the 3L is a very nice engine and I don't think anyone could say anything against it at all - all the strength of the 2L, no head problems and a bit more power too. Nice long stroke engine so plent of torque for the size too.

Did Toyota build an 80 series with front independant suspension, I thought that was on the 100 series.

No he most definately got that wrong - solid axles on all of them. 100 series was the first IFS large Cruiser.

He also seems to be wrong about the 70 series being leaf springs ?

My 70 series was most definatly on coils.

I think we can safely say he is obviously someone who doesn't know what they are on about and has probably never seen one apart from in a magazine.

His next review is on the ford crossflow engine powering cars to the speed of sound

the 80 series was the last of the 'real landcruisers'

P@ICK!

If his facts were accurate about the models he did report on then he might have at least some credibility.

I did try to report him, but on the drop down menu choices there is no option for a totally inacurate report.

I did see the comment

"then we are coming into the '2-tonne tarts handbag' zone which the later ones seem to have gone overboard for !"

:naughty:

I sent ebay a message telling them of the inaccuracies in the buying guide
