Hello the guys, well I hope this is not too OTT becasue I have this
questions too but for Navman F20. There Navman web site is catastrophe
and no body know how to buy updated maps for them navigateurs.
Does any body know how to buy Navman F20 new maps for my 80? May be
some good british company like Dixon or some thing?

Hi Peter,
regarding the location - I was quite lucky in that respect since the
previous owner had an old school phone installation so I used the it for
gps installation. But the mount is actually a simple V shaped steel
plate which is mounted on top of the dashboard (with screws on the inner
side - so they are not visible). The plate is thin and it fits into the
small gap - the standard marine mount which is supplied with the 276 is
then fixed into the plate.
accessories - the only thing I really needed were the storage cards - I
bought a 256 MB card and for the time been it satisfy all my
requirements ...
Let me know if you need a photo of mounting ...
Regards,
Tomaz

I have the 276c but I mount it on the flat surface to the left of the
transfer case gear stick - I have an auto. I decided not to mount it on the
dash as the mount is a visible and permanent fixing and I live in London....
The aeiral is fixed to the roof, just above the passenger sunvisor, and
cabled down into the car from there. A bit DIY but it works. I may move the
aerial if I fit a snorkel or just mount it on the bonnet. Having said that,
I've never had a problem with reception...

Many people here use mapping on their PCs without using a GPS.

True. Best leave it where it is I think.
Haven't forgotten the spanner... Not been at home much lately.

Peter,
What's the aerial for? CB , FM or UHF radio?

Peter,
Anywhere on the dashboard will do. A RAM mount would be useful for that, too.
I suppose the receiver is sensitive enough to pick up the signal as
long as it's anywhere near a window. If it's not, there are other
options available.
Problems I can envisage with this receiver:
- finding good maps
- the display is small and hard to read due to vibrations
- the screen can be difficult to read i direct sunlight. Some sort of
screen hood would be helpful.

Peter,
I don't know about this Garmin model, but I'd try first the internal
antenna that comes with the unit. SIRIF III processors are pretty
sensitive. The one in my XDA Orbit mobile phone will pick up the
signal almost anywhere, also indoors near a window.
As for PMR446 personal mobile radios, go for Motorola (cheap) or Icom
(better built).

You can buy an external aerial for a Garmin 276c - in fact there are 2 types,
one for boats and for cars. You'll find them if you do a google trawl.
GPS units like this are limited compared to mapping but the best thing they
offer is the trackback facility like leaving a chalk trail behind you. Very
handy in the middle of the night in sand, although I'd avoid night driving as
much as possible.
