I would always prefer to leave the car with fresh engine oil in the
sump after running it for maybe a day.
I leave my Pajero parked in a marina next to my boat for up to 8
months at a time. I do the engine oil, ensure the anti freeze and
screen washer fluids are all as they should be and fill-up the tank
to the brim.
A mate starts it and moves it once a month to get the engine warm and
charge the battery and then also rotate the wheels to keep them round'ish.
So if the batteries are removed as well as the tyres, then I guess
that I would still renew the engine oil and fill the tank. I much
prefer the engine to sit in clean fresh neutral oil, rather than sit
bathed in oil full of acids and corrosive by-products of the previous
3000 miles or so of combustion. I always have additive in the
diesel, but the only trouble with using fuel that is 6 months or so
old, is that it can get 'stale' and smoke a bit more, so I fill it
when half full or even sooner to get some new stuff running through the engine.

yes, thanks for the offer of "popping round" and turning it over for me! at
least it made me smile, what with all the other kak happening around me at
the moment...
as to the vehicle, on collation and distillation of advice (!), i've decided
to put it on axle stands, take the wheels off, disconnect the batts but
leave all oils and fluids intact. i'll get a full "c" service when we get
back (which is now an annual january event) as i'll be bringing back with me
lots of bushes & bits that have fallen off etc...
thanks to all for their advice/suggestions and i hope to meet some of you
when i pull in to the uk.

yes i agree with your reasoning - allowing the engine to sit in a bath of
weak acid is not my idea of good storage - and i also will note the full
tank (hadn't thought of that one). dropped a can of holts radweld into the
radiator just to make sure of the cooling system but must remember to flush
the brake system when i get back as brake fluid is hydro/hygro (?) -scopic.
it's a shame we are leaving now as the dry season, and therefore the best
traveling season, runs from dec to march and we had tentatively planned to
do tsavo nat pk on our way to the coast. now everything is going to depend
on how the laaitie and my missus bear up under the strain! julian - how soon
can you overland with an infant?

i have no idea - i would happily go tomorrow if i could!
in reality babies are very portable and don't do much in the first few
months other than eat/drink, sleep, poo and fart which would be fine
when travelling, although you will often need to open the window!
my wife's biggest concern on the travelling front in your are would be
the malaria issue and giving a young baby/young children anti malarial
drugs, but suspect that she is probably being a bit paranoid about
that.
