Looking for brand new 76 (5 door) V8, turbo/Intrcoll LHD

Hi All!
I am from Turkmenistan, but currently stuck virtually in the middle of Indian Ocean having time to choose my next dream car. Could anybody guide me where I can find LEFT-HAND LC 76 (5 door), V8 turbo charged with inter-cooler (like Aussies and S.Africans have)? I had Nissan Patrol 2006 4,2L diesel before - kinda liked it, but sometimes felt it under powered. Nice car though. This time want to buy a real one and invest a lot into it for overlanding and loooong trips.

Hi Murad,

South Africa does not have the turbo diesel 76 - my guess is you'd need to look at LHD markets and see whether the local Toyota dealers can suply you with one.

I did so also. But no. Imagine! My friend has a company in Dubai and he checked all the options. The only modification coming there is standard 4,2 diesel. What a pitty...

Looks like your out of luck, according to ToyoDiy these are the only 2011 LHD landcruisers with the 1VDFTV engine you are after. Basically you can only get the 200 series in with the V8 diesel lump in LHD.

Try Footloose 4x4 who got my 78 series. 2x 90 fuel tanks, 2x locking diffs, snorkel, etc. 4.2 naturally aspirated. They're looking at bringing in 4.5lt turbo versions in LHD/RHD.

Good luck,all the evidence so far shows they are only in RHD with the V8 diesel.

Thanks All for your inputs. As mentioned correctly, it seems like, all V8s of 76 series come in RHD. Will keep an eye on S. America.

What do you think: if buy standard 76 with 4,2L and then swap the engine for V8? Any difference and deficiencies coming from gear box? How different are the fasteners? Any experiences?

I would think it'd be more economical to buy a RHD V8 and convert it to LHD?

I'd agree with Jim - I thought this was something Toyota designed in? Historically you've been able to convert LHD to RHD and vice versa by swapping out the dash for the right version and then switching all the controls around and flipping the steering and wipers over? All the mounts and cut-outs we're mirrored I thought?

Perhaps with the advent of larger, more diverse markets and model line-ups, and more automated build lines, this practice ended?

Hi! Yes, I agree - logically it would be easier to swop RHD to LHD. The problem is eventually this car should at some point return to my country and be fully registered there with police and other transport authorities. And law there says "no convertibles" . It started when people began to import cheap, old second-hand Japanese cars and convert them into LHD. The accident rate and fatalities jumped out of the roof in a matter of 2-3 years. It is complex problem, but when those cars arrived many people preferred inter-city travels by car, which were made private taxis by then, to other means of transport. Due to high demand from population cars were converted in a matter of almost overnight sometimes done very-very cheaply and with low quality. So authorities decided to cut importing RHDs at all, convertibles in-country were denied to re-registration. Until now - no convertibles allowed. Sorry should've explained it before. But I guess this info would be interesting to other members of the forum. So when traveling I would suspect difficulties crossing Turkmenistan with RHD... Haven't checked it yet, but when I have chance I will.
So this was the reason on buying new engine instead of converting it.
Any other ideas are most welcomed!

He can do the VDJ7x in LHD but my German isn't good enough to understand the detail of the conversion.

Officially the VDJ7x is only sold in Aus and only RHD.

Wont work ,Toyota widened the chassis rails on the new models to accomadate the extra width of the V8.
As for the gearbox ,the V8 is using the same H151 which was on the 6 cyl engines and has been in use since 1990.

Well it seems that the only way is to stick to original 4,2L and try to turbo charge it with low pressure charger.

It would be more reliable to swap the 1HZ non turbo 4.2 for a one of the following turbo variants: 1HD-T, 1HD-FT and 1HD-FTE. The FTE variant has an electrically controlled fuel pump so may be a bit more difficult to swap it over.

Just post on the forum and we should be able to help. I am by means an expert on engine swaps but I do know all the engines I listed have almost identical blocks so in terms of gearbox and engine mount fitments it should just be an easy swap. The 1HD-FTE was fitted to some 70 series vehicles last decade.
