Thanks to Clive, Anthony, Gareth, Ian and Julian.
And before I get another complaint that I am always behind with postings on
topics;not only do I spend time away from the net during the week whilst at
work, this last week we had so much snow that they ran out of de-icer for
the main phone company satellite dish that it filled-up with snow and
knocked it out. On top of that we had such low temperatures on the top of
the tall buildings that have the UHF repeaters that some broke down with
physical frost damage, so my last posting to Elco came via a landline to
Croatia.
Matt would have been in snow chain sales heaven this last week if he had a
shop here, and my chains have been used so much that they have worn
sufficient for me to take-in a stitch on each of them to compensate. I took
them off last night and managed to get home on tyres thankfully.
But anyway, comments on BFG AT's are interesting, yet no one likes them
here in the wet. I appreciate that Wales has a something of a wet climate
but I wonder if the difference for us is the standing water that
we encounter? Our roads are bad and usually have no camber, kerb, or
roadside drainage. This leads not just to large lakes at the side of the
road, but a healthy covering of water over the entire surface and we can
get 2 days and nights of continuous rain, something I have rarely
encountered in UK, even in my beloved Argyll ;-)
Its still tyres with some clear grooves around the circumference that get
the vote. I did once have GY Wrangler AT's on my 4Runner, but they were not
as good as the Dunlops on my 80. Anyway, thanks all for your views. I will
see what damage the chains have done to my tyres, and if I need some
replacements I will try and get some Pirelli Scorpions if I can find them
at the right price. Pity we can't drive back to UK to get some of the
bargains I see advertised in the mags over there.
Cheers

Jon,
It often rains here in Wale for far more than two days continuously and can
often rain for over a week without stopping. I have not been to Bosnia so
can not really comment on the roads there, or trunk roads can be good but
the smaller roads especially the unclassified ones are very poor and it is
common to find standing water on them and also on the rated roads under
heavy torrential rain.
American tyres tend to have harder compounds to allow higher mileages but
even so I have never encountered a problem and as I have said nor with mud
terrains which is what I formally ran on, and I do not hang about.
I wonder what is the standard of driving and what sort of tyre pressures are
being run to experience such problems? (Present company accepted)
