Just to complete the thread we had about 3 weeks
ago, when Chris was kind enough to give us the
detail of his recommended workshop in Exeter.
This was partly prompted by Andy's gearbox noise
of which I have heard no more, so was it that
central muffler bearing in the end Andy ? ;-)
I have spoken to Exeter gearbox centre about
overhauling a 5 speed manual box. They seem very
knowledgeable about TLC's and immediately had
prices to hand for the 80 series. The man even
had experience of my unusual engine (not supplied
in Europe or Japan) and also of the simplicity of
its military specification. All prices are plus VAT of course.
So the basics are =A3110 to remove the box and
replace it ready to run - which equates to about
2 hours work which seems amazing to me.
To strip the internals and rebuild the box is
=A3180 for labour, and parts extra, but he insists
that they will not use a full 'repair
kit' usually sold at a maximum price and often
including parts that do not need replacement, but
replace just the bits that need it. The bearings
and seals etc. they already have in stock, and
he is satisfied that any Toyota OEM parts can be
obtained in a maximum of 2 days. Naturally on top
of that would be the cost of a clutch re-build
for which the additional labour cost would be
minimal for just stripping and bolting back-up
whilst the engine and gearbox are already split.
Total time he says would be to allow a maximum of
4 days and current lead time for December is 4
working days. So those not local will also have a
bill for 4 days subsistence or a train fare to home and back.
So now you know, and thanks Chris once again.
Cheers
