My first Land Cruiser

i just bought my first Land Cruiser, a 1984. It is a beast!

It sat outside, uncovered and unused for over a year.

After an oil change, battery replacement, and minor carb adjustment, it roared to life! It ran great for a few weeks and then, failed to start. It cranks fine but just will not fire.

i removed the air cleaner and squirted a small amount of fuel into the throat while someone cranked it. It fired up and quickly quit after burning the fuel that was squirted.

Does this point to a fuel pump issue? If so, where is the fuel pump and is this a job that a rookie should attempt?

Thanks for your help.

Can't anyone confirm my belief and/or tell me where the fuel pump is located?

110+ views and not even one attempt at an answer!

Did I ask the question wrong?

yes what model engine, which model cruiser? plus i think you have answered your own question if it work when fuel is put into the carb then you need to make sure the pipe have no blockage, the fuel filter is clear.

Thank you for the response.

i'm not sure of the model or engine but the VIN number is JT3FJ60G9E1102555. Does this help?

Great suggestions and I will check the filter and the fuel line for blockages.

if the fuel pump needs replacing, is this a job for a rookie?

google search landcruiser and find out what model 40, 50, 60,70 series would be helpfull.

Although I've had a couple of Cruisers with this engine in my experience is limited but I will have a go. It would seem apparent that it is not ignition related as it always starts if fuel is added to the intake. I would check that Fuel is actually being pumped to the carb by loosening the banjo union on the carb and seeing if fuel is being pumped to that point, if it is then the fault lies within the carb, if it is not then you will have to find the fault by process of elimination of blockage of pipes to pump performance. If I remember the fuel pump is on the side of the engine block, just trace the solid pipes back from the carb and you should find it.
I hope this helps.

It does help, Andy.

Thanks for the effort.

i'll get under the hood in a day or two and let you know if I can find the fuel pump!

3FJ60 was the key bit of the VIN; FJ60 with the 3F petrol.

Fortunately the rest of the world got a range of Land Cruisers, and they all came with a wide range of engines, and in some cases a range of body styles, which makes it a bit harder when you announce "I've got a Land Cruiser with a problem"

I know the US mainly got the 40 series (as the FJ40 SWB, in both 41 and 42 versions) and the 60 series, latterly the 80 series and I think the 100 and 200 series as the Land Cruiser and Lexus versions, whilst the 120 and 150 series Prado/Colorado as the Lexus GX470 (120 series) and GX460 (150 series)

Andy,

I unscrewed the fuel supply line at the carb, cranked the engine and saw fuel pulsing out. So, I guess this means the fuel pump is pumping, yet it still won't start.

Since it will fire with fuel squirted in the carb and we know the fuel pump is pumping, it seems then that the problem must be in the carb???

Any suggestions?

Take it apart and clean it

Start with the float valve (if there is one) they stick open/closed sometimes IMHO.
