Judging from the pattern of the spray on the underside it appears to be from
where the drive shaft meets the diff, just after the flange with the bolts
holding the drive shaft.
Is there a seal of some sort in between the diff and the drive shaft.
SNIP
JB. Yes there is a seal there and it is not too difficult to replace,
as long as you have one big socket for the pinion nut and then an
even bigger socket to use as a drift to push the new seal in.
BUT. Depending on how soon you have seen this after the leak started,
you may not have to replace it. A diff pinion seal leak is the
classic first sign of the breather being blocked. (Breather can't
function, diff heats up, air above oil expands with heat, extra
pressure cannot relieve through valve at end of breather, pressure
forces oil out of seal.)
I remember that a while ago you asked us about renewing your breather
set-up and to eliminate restrictions. So did you do it? If you did
not then you might have a chance to eliminate or at least reduce the
leak by dealing with your breather. But if you did, then its time to
do the pinion seal, but even your Yaris expert should not charge too
much as long as the operation is within his obvious technical limitations !

Hey Jon
Thanks for the info as usual appreciated.
I do as im told or advised most of the time and thats how it works, I ask
the guys who know like you and then follow their instructions .
That if if I can and its not too complcated for my mecanical challanged
skills.
I did extend the breathers about two years ago now I think, so it must be
the seal CRAP.
I left the cruiser in to Yaris guys today and we will see what they come up
with as excuses.
They adjusted my lights prior to the test and it failed the test regarding
the lights .
I told the garage forman this and ( well he said that is common , when you
hit a bump or pot hole the head light beam can be put off) I dont know how I
kept the smile from coming out all over my face.
They fitted all new wheel bearings inner and outer on all 4 wheels a while
back and it would seem they need adjusting of some sort.
I told him there was movement when the wheel was held at 12 and 6 and he
just said ok we will check.
thanks

Well done JB, so therefore if you followed our advice with the
extended breathers, especially about not re-using the Toy valves on
the end, then you can sit back with the satisfaction that you could
have had the pinion seal go 2 years ago using the old blocked
breathers. Those super breathers may have given you another 2 years
use from the seal and that must be good.
So just for once go and pat yourself on the back and have a
celebratory pint of guinness ;o)
Well done
Cheers
