Off-road Pakistan Styleee

Hi Guys,
Some friends have recently completed a tour in the Thar desert area of
Pakistan. I know they are not based in Europe but I am :-) There is no
extreme off roading happening but I really wanted to share some of the
pictures of the Thar desert. There is a Prado amongst them somewhere so
defiantly "LC Content".
I will be over there in November/December so hopefully will be enjoying some
Desi "Laning" and then on to Dubai for some Dune Bashing.
There are quite a few pictures so if you're not on broadband I wouldn't
bother unless you are really keen. If this is of no interest to some of you
then I apologies for wasting 2kb of your bandwidth :-) For those that do

The desert ones after the rain are fantastic, and look like paintings.

Thanks for the comments, yes you are correct about the next button being a
bit small and unnoticeable. The border between that part of Pakistan and
India is like any other peaceful border, perfectly safe unless you try to
cross it illegally. Fortunatly both are armies are "Standing Down" at the
moment. The troubled area is further north in the Kashmir region but then
again only if you are trying to cross over. They have opened up many
checkposts in the past year or so where you can cross over and finally there
is lots of talks, trade, joint ventures, joint TV programs happening which
is really great.
I am hoping to spend some time in the desert while I am there, but what I am
really looking forward to is a Dam which is about 15 minutes from where I
will be staying

For a part of the year the water level retreats back for miles as water is
used to power the generator turbines and then fills up again as the snow
melts in the mountains. When partly dry you have vast expanses of dried
cracked land, bit like Salt flats they use for land speeds records but its
not flat. There small hills and valleys that are normally hidden by the
water and the remains of villages that were evacuated to make room for the
Dam. You also come across the odd pool of water teaming with fish that have
got trapped when the water receded.
Absolutly amazing for ATV and 4X4's. I'll make sure I bring back loads of
pics.

You are going to Pakistan in November arn't you?, could you, when you are
there, just get an idea/enquire for us here back in the UK about the
offroading? I'd love to go there, and those photos are very
enticing...which is the idea, naturally.
The sand appears were white, is it gypsum-based? with chalk?

I love Pakistan - it has everything. Thar Desert, Balichistan Desert (
My favourite), Karakoram Range, Swat Valley, Gilgit and Hunza Valleys,
the greenery of the Indus Valley, Ft Munro Pass... Oh boy, I can go on
and on... and friendly helpful people. :-)

Like Afghanistan its a country that I would love to visit. The environment
appeals to me.
I was wondering whether we could get to Pakistan, I don't mind taking the
risk so long as we cover our backs as it were.
Methinks I should start checking some more websites....and find some
interesting links hopefully

(I would expect you do!), and, my domain, and do you know of the ancient
Indus Valley civilisations?
Maybe we should think about organising a trip? what do you think?

Have looked at your pictures, all you're doing is making me jealous....
Nice to know your home cruiser is white, just like mine....snorkel the same,
but ma beast is battered up more than yours...well, it IS used for
offroading and for the Sahara...
Dorset, eh? I'm still doing my p/t PhD at Bournemouth - we should meet up
sometime, it would be nice to meet you both.
