Oil analysis?

After a bad experience with buying a Troop Carrier and having the gearbox fall apart (no oil changes done by previous owners) I wonder if anyone has experience with oil analysis to predict maintenance issues.

Metal particles in the oil might give a warning. Not the yellow bronze ones though. Their presence proves the synchro is working. Lacking in the poor change 80 boxes which have clean oil proving the synchro is not working.

I don't think oil neglect would spoil a gearbox especially nowadays when manual boxes don't have an oil change schedule.

I assume you are talking manual?

Yup, a manual. When opened it had lots of metal pieces in the oil. No prior issues (no noise nor hard shifting), then failure "all of a sudden".
