So I finally got round to checking the oil pickup. Without the bashplates and a seized nut (que grinder) it would have taken about 30 minutes to check.
Pick was clean!

If you compare it to another 120 that had a dirty / partially blocked one:

If you have a look at the pics, there are a disturbing amount of filings on the pickup (should I be disturbed? Maybe "normal"?) A couple of them were curled while most were just very small shavings. They look like ali and seeing as there is nothing stuck to the drain plug, guessing they were.
As for being clean, the last change about 6-7k ago, I used a bottle of wynnes engine flush. I repeated for this change. Could / would that have cleaned the pickup thereby hiding something else?
If that is the case, it would still stop your engine suffering from oil problems.
So, mostly happy except wondering about the filings...
