was a great days laning around Shropshire, doing a route that i regularly do, which includes all my favourite interesting lanes, and avoids all the not so interesting ones.
a few people have expressed an interest in coming over one of the days for a days laning. i will be very happy to lead a group around and show you the best lanes Shropshire has to offer.
on this trip there was me in my 70 and Gav and Keith in there 80's.
so fuelling up with 70 litres of 100% vegetable oil ready for the trip.
wasnt sure how much id need for the weekend, so ended up taking far too much.
meeting up with the others for a spot of pre laning breakfast.
end of first lane.
end of third lane.
start of 4th lane, where things started getting a lot more technical and tight.
only about a foot deep today, but i have seen this river 6ft deep and a raging torrent after heavy rain!
onto the next lanes which is one of my favourites!
second river crossing of the day, again not too deep but 1 that requires caution after heavy rain.
the 80's coming down to the river.
gets wider and deeper at the end.
Gav making a nice splash.
from the river its a bit of a climb up some interesting rock steps.
next lane is very muddy, although it is a lot dryer than normal due to not having had any rain for a while. (this was why are trucks turned up so dirty to Lincomb.)
1 stuck 80, so a quick pull from my 70 and hes through the first bit.
Gav powers through on his simex tryes!
doesnt look too deep, until your in it!
wet gloopy sticky mud!
Keiths 80 lining up ready to go through.
unfortunately the 80 got delayed again, so a quick pull from my 70 and hes free again.
a few road miles later and were onto another interesting lane. at the start of the lane it drives along a stream bed for 50ft, which on this occasion was little more than a trickle, but after rain it can be a foot or 2 deep and be nearer 70 or 80ft long.
2 lanes later and were onto another gem of a lane, which starts with a steep tight climb, before opening out onto a wide open lane.
next one of my real favourites, and a lane that seems to change weekly due to water erosion. the lane is in the middle of a gorge with high banks each side, and after heavy rain becomes one long flowing river of water for the entire length of the lane, so maybe 400-500ft long.
it is also very tight and technical with lots of trees.
some very nice articulation from Gav's 80.
that lane done its a few miles drive to the next 1, which has a big river crossing. not too deep today, but this isnt passable sometimes even after only a small amount of rain. i have seen this in full swell after 4 hours rain and it must have been 8ft deep in the middle and very fast flowing.
another mile or 2 and we cross the river again a bit further down stream. unfortunately i didnt take any pics but this is a much more challenging crossing. the approach has a bit of a side slope and is a bit rutted, then the climb out of the river on the other side is very steep. my 70 struggles to get up it, but will go with a bit of shunting and plenty of throttle in first low. the 80's with there longer wheel base's crawled straight up.
so onto the next lane, this has 2 small fords 100 yards apart. these never get too deep even after heavy rain.
we then did another lane that wasnt to challenging as it was dry, but it can get very muddy after rain.
then onto another one of my favourite lanes that has a lovely wide ford at the bottom.
beautiful scenery.
a quick group photo, before we begin with the technical bit.
and down and through the tiny gate.
Keith trying to negotiate around the tree.
and through the gate.
we decided to head over to Lincomb at this point, but normally i would continue and do a few more challenging lanes, and a few more water crossings.
was a great few hours laning.
