was a great days laning around Shropshire, doing a route that i regularly do, which includes all my favourite interesting lanes, and avoids all the not so interesting ones.

a few people have expressed an interest in coming over one of the days for a days laning. i will be very happy to lead a group around and show you the best lanes Shropshire has to offer.

on this trip there was me in my 70 and Gav and Keith in there 80's.

so fuelling up with 70 litres of 100% vegetable oil ready for the trip.

wasnt sure how much id need for the weekend, so ended up taking far too much. :?

start of 4th lane, where things started getting a lot more technical and tight.

only about a foot deep today, but i have seen this river 6ft deep and a raging torrent after heavy rain!

from the river its a bit of a climb up some interesting rock steps.

next lane is very muddy, although it is a lot dryer than normal due to not having had any rain for a while. (this was why are trucks turned up so dirty to Lincomb.)

PICT0053.jpg

1 stuck 80, so a quick pull from my 70 and hes through the first bit.

a few road miles later and were onto another interesting lane. at the start of the lane it drives along a stream bed for 50ft, which on this occasion was little more than a trickle, but after rain it can be a foot or 2 deep and be nearer 70 or 80ft long.

PICT0089.jpg

2 lanes later and were onto another gem of a lane, which starts with a steep tight climb, before opening out onto a wide open lane.

PICT0090.jpg

PICT0091.jpg

PICT0092.jpg

PICT0093.jpg

next one of my real favourites, and a lane that seems to change weekly due to water erosion. the lane is in the middle of a gorge with high banks each side, and after heavy rain becomes one long flowing river of water for the entire length of the lane, so maybe 400-500ft long.
it is also very tight and technical with lots of trees.

PICT0101.jpg

PICT0102.jpg

some very nice articulation from Gav's 80.

PICT0105.jpg

PICT0106.jpg

that lane done its a few miles drive to the next 1, which has a big river crossing. not too deep today, but this isnt passable sometimes even after only a small amount of rain. i have seen this in full swell after 4 hours rain and it must have been 8ft deep in the middle and very fast flowing.

PICT0109.jpg

PICT0110.jpg

PICT0111.jpg

another mile or 2 and we cross the river again a bit further down stream. unfortunately i didnt take any pics but this is a much more challenging crossing. the approach has a bit of a side slope and is a bit rutted, then the climb out of the river on the other side is very steep. my 70 struggles to get up it, but will go with a bit of shunting and plenty of throttle in first low. the 80's with there longer wheel base's crawled straight up.

so onto the next lane, this has 2 small fords 100 yards apart. these never get too deep even after heavy rain.

PICT0113.jpg

PICT0114.jpg

we then did another lane that wasnt to challenging as it was dry, but it can get very muddy after rain.
then onto another one of my favourite lanes that has a lovely wide ford at the bottom.

PICT0115.jpg

beautiful scenery.

PICT0117.jpg

a quick group photo, before we begin with the technical bit.

and down and through the tiny gate.

PICT0131.jpg

PICT0133.jpg

and through the gate.

PICT0135.jpg

we decided to head over to Lincomb at this point, but normally i would continue and do a few more challenging lanes, and a few more water crossings.

was a great few hours laning.

Didn't see digbeth lane in the pics Ben, you should give it a try if you haven't, pretty sure Keith knows where I mean

 the name doesnt ring a bell. will have to check the map. its not the long steep climb thats been cut into the mountain that seems to go on for ages and ages, and all you can see when driving up it is sky is it? Keith mentioned that one.

if so i try to avoid that one, as i find it a bit boring and it doesnt fit in very nicely with my route as you dont end up near the next lanes.

Great pics Ben - many thanks for taking us around your 'patch' Quality trip & looking forward to doing some more with you sometime

Cheers

No that's probably Hungerford steps you're thinking of with the drunk farmer and his dogs? Digbeth Lane is from SO7844593269 to SO7885593639. You'd want to check it hasn't been closed but last I heard it was still a BOAT. It's just a bit tight in places, or was the last time I drove it which was a few years ago. Have a look at it first if you're passing, could be stoned farm track or a real squeeze by now.

thanks John, yes i was thinking of hungerford, never seen a drunk farmer though.

just did a bit of searching and found a vid of digbeth lane. im pretty sure i have done it, but that would be in my other Shropshire route which starts in Bridgnorth.

the other route is ok but i probably only do it a couple of times a year as i dont think the lanes are that great, although there a few good ones.

Looks like the farmer got wise and opened it up. When we opened it up about 5 years ago we were cutting steel bollards down and climbing over big rocks. Down by the challets you couldn't get through without damage from the trees, think that's where Keith started damaging his disco when we took him for a gentle run :)

He did mention that sort of carry on a few times while we were out with him Jon

Looks like some really good lanes. I'll have to try and get up there sometime
