[Radiator leaks]

Hi All
Got home from work to find that the radiator is now leaking after what I had
originally thought was an uneventful drive back from Deal in Kent last
night. Can't see any evidence of damage from the outside and the leak seems
to be coming from near the top. This is the second radiator the car has had
since new so I guess I am lucky (unlucky?). However, is it worth repairing
as the rad is only two years old and the leak seems quite minor?
First one died when a stone went straight thru the rad on the motorway one
night on the way home from Kent. Complete loss of coolant and a quick call
to AA and got home at 3.30am. Could have been worse I guess. If I remember
correctly I think I paid ?200.00 fitted.

At least near the top is still going to give some service, near the
bottom is US. I repaired one once for my sons Surf with a piece of
copper pipe flattened out and soft soldered, it lasted a couple of
years. Proffesional repairs are usually expensive so, if you intend to
keep the truck, go for new. If you want to save money and have a play,
repair it. At worst you will have to go proffesional or new if you
balls it up.

Hi Clive
Thanks for that. What does the board think of rad sealing additives like
radweld etc? I have used them before with no major issues but worried that
I may block up something important.

Simon,
IMHO like every stop gap solution (sic!) it is a good emergency
measure to contain a pinhole leak but it doesn't give you any control
over the quality of repairs.

Hi Simon,
I have used them in the past, but only in an emergency. If you use them and
they don't work you need to make sure you do a thorough flush to clean it out
when you get the leak properly fixed.

As Roman said, OK if you want a few more weeks out of a rad. that is
going to be replaced but flush the system properly when you change it.

Hy Simon,
I also have a mis-trust of radiator sealing compounds, I feel that they
will block up somthing that should not be blocked.
I have no evidence that this is the case, and in fact, I have used
'Rad-weld' on a Hilux truck that I once owned.
I had replaced the rad. on the truck once. It lasted about 18 months and
punctured again. I was a bit pi**ed off to say the least, and in a fit of
peak, I bunged in a tin of Rad-weld.
I had the truck for three years after the stuff went in and had no further
trouble with it.
When I sold the vehicle (to a friend) he continued to run the truck for a
further four years and did nothing to the radiator at all.
I supose that if it lasts seven years with no known ill-effect I should
realy endorse the product, but ...well...!
