Andy, a very simple source of information, that applies to most vehicles.
Call in to your nearest Halfords, have a look at the audio section for the connector adaptors - for a Toyota the part niumber is - PC2 - 17 - 4. On the rear of the packaging you will find a chart of wire function and the associated colour and trace colours.
My radio wiring was also the proverbial rats nest and the wiring to the speakers was pathetic. I ditched the five O/E speakers and the rear sub amplifier, behind the rear panel, along with all the wiring. I have fitted some Sony 3 way speakers in the lower dashboard panels. A pair of 6 x 9 speakers in the load compartment, my dogs enjoy listening to the Archers, and a pair of Pioneer speakers with separate tweeters in the rear doors. I had to do quite a bit of cutting for the speakers in the rear load area.
I also rewired all the speakers with some decent thick cable, in order to this I had to remove the seats and the carpets to ensure it ran in the correct places. I bought "flat" audio cable where the two cables run paralell to each other and put plenty of duct tape to hold / protect it.
Someone I work with is selling a Pioneer Digital Radio, only 12 months old, at a very considerable saving over the new price, I also bought some of the speakers off him, and I will be fitting the head unit today. So later on I will find out how it all sounds. I had to buy an adaptor from the radio to the power aerial.
