Hi All,
Just a quickie to reintroduce myself - having left the group about 6
months ago - and generally do the prodigal son routine.
I'm Andy Bell, 31, married with a young daughter, business systems
consultant, wannabe desert explorer and I've got 2 80 series cruisers.
One is a '95 UK spec VX petrol (1FZ-FE) which is in South Africa, where
I'm trying to live, and a newly purchased '97 UK spec GX diesel (1HD-FT)
which is in Clitheroe, where I actually do live at the moment. The
former is quite modded, with OME suspension/caster correction,
polybushes, FrontRunner 168 litre sub tank, Desert Stormer tyre/jack
carrier, Hellroaring twin battery system and the like, and the latter is
bog standard as I've only had it for 4 days!
I've bought this latest 80 for, among other things, a trip to Mali with
a mate this New Year - which leaves me reflecting on the irony of having
all the adventure bits sitting on the one in SA!
Julian tells me there are lots of new people on the list (since I left
it to temporarily move abroad), so Hello! to them and to everyone else.
Okay - here are my questions:
1 - Oil etc - I'm just wondering what sort of oil those of you who
change your own are putting in your diesels at the moment (engine,
tranny and diffs)? It would be nice to find a place where you can get
say 25 litre drums of the right stuff at the right price? Also, does
anyone have an opinion on those cheap 'Boshi' filters that Milner sell?
2 - Tools - Sadly my new cruiser hath no toolkit or jack. Does anyone
have any surplus bits of the standard toolkit they'd like to flog me -
especially the jack handle and standard jack, before I make a trip to
the highwayman, Mr Toyota?
3 - Strange valves - This is my first 1HD-FT - could someone tell me
what the 2 disc shaped valve things on the inlet manifold (on their own
branch of it) are for?
4 - Paint - Just a long shot - the GX is green (as many of the ones that
aren't red are!). Has anyone found a commonly avaialbe touch up - for,
say, another manufacturer that is a close match?
Anyway - nice to be back on the list. Look forward to meeting some of
you guys sometime.
Regards,
Andy Bell

Hi Andy,
You can have the tool kit and jack from my 94 for a drink but postage
might cost more than the drink! I'm in the West Midlands (DY9 0YE) if
you want to find out how much it would cost or have an alternative
cunning plan.
Best Regards,
Jon.

Hi Andy,
Welcome back - did you manage to get your batteries sorted?
At the moment I have been using Comma Semi Synthetic in the engine
which is available in 25litre containers.
Looking around the other day most motor factors only seem to sell basic
branded stuff like the Comma oils (OK they do sell some reasonable
engine oils in smaller containers, but when you looks for better
quality diff oils, auto box oils or greases then you get stuck) - if
you want more specific oils and more sensible prices then you will need
to ring around the local oil distributors or try the local Agricultural
Engineers.
These are Exhaust Gas Recirculating valves that route some of the
exhaust gases back into the inlet manifold in a bid to reduce
emissions. You can disable these by removing and blanking off the
small hoses that go to the diaphragms at the top of them.
Have you tried Toyota? When I picked mine up from Stuart he gave me a
couple of new cans and touchup sticks recently bought from Toyota.
Alternatively call your local motor factors and quote them the paint
code.

Hi Jon - thanks very much indeed for the offer of the tools. As I've
just escaped from SA, I have no tools at all other than a socket set I
got at the weekend. If I get a puncture at the moment, I'm going to
look like a proper burk.
I've used a courier called postvan.com before - they are a right bargain
at 10.95 + vat next day to anywhere for up to 20kg. I would happily
book these - or alternatively we could hang on until the forthcoming
landcruisers.info meet, which I plan to be at - wherever it ends up
being. A drink is more than reasonable as insurance against be mocked
by the police on the hard shoulder of the M6 :) My email address is
[Email address removed] - if we can make a plan off list.
All the best,
Andy
