Is it an Auto Patou? If so, with the engine running and the gearbox up to running temperature, cycle through all gears and reverse, then, back in Neutral, dip the auto box and check the level of the ATF. It should be between the marks marked ‘hot’.
Valve body or transmission ecu. Check the solenoids out first then the feed to the solenoids when you engage reverse. after that you've got a stuck valve in valve body. Either way could take a bit of time to diagnose, just fitting another gearbox may not be the answer either.
