Revision of a B engine

I'm restoring a Toyota Landcruiser BJ40 (04/1980) as a hobby, I'm not a professional, when I got to the engine I ordered a complete set of gaskets because there was a little bit of oil on the right side of the engine.
When I took the cylinder head off I saw there was a little crack in one of the four pistons. There were also small cracks in the front chambers in the cylinder head.
They suggested me I have 2 options:
- Revision of the engine, drill out the engine block and install overhead pistons. Anybody a idea how much this costs?
- Buy 4 pistons (to be sure) with new rings and letting the front chambers get replaced.
Hoping for the best of your experience.
Greetings

Hi there

i am no expert either but I would say that it would be easier and cheaper to find a better secondhand engine

Years ago I did a fair bit of fitting reconditioned engines into older cars.

Times have changed and cars are now scrapped when the engine is finished, so a lot of the specialist reconditioning companies have died out.

There's still a few left in the UK http://www.cambridge-rebores.co.uk/services/engine-reconditioning and I would imagine the same in Belgium.

The price of the parts is the main expense, the re-boring and crank grinding (if needed) are relatively cheap compared with the price of new pistons and rings. Cylinder heads can be expensive if the valve guides need replacing, new valves, springs and the list can go on.

my advice would be to either source a better second hand engine, or put the whole reconditioning process in the hands of a company as above. That way you'll have a warranty of some sort should you have a problem after reassembly.

I can promise only one thing, it won't be cheap.

Thanks for your comment, Giles.
I thought about that too but I thought the engine that I have now was a good one (nothing to see/hear when the engine was running), like I said, it's only a small crack in one of the pistons.
If I buy another one, I can have 2 bad ones and money lost that I could invest in the revision in the engine that I have now.
Any thoughts are more then welcome ;-)!
