Roofrack for a 60

Any thoughts on the cheapest way to get some kind of roofrack on a HJ60?
It just needs to be functional, not pretty, ideally so people can
walk/sleep on it.
Any thoughts appreciated?

I would it to be quite light as any weight up top is a) bad for centre of
gravity and b) reduces what you can carry on it.
I would be tempted to weld some bracketry on the roof and bolt and aluminium
rack onto that, keeping it as close to the roof as possible. Problem with
welding on the roof is the headlining etc inside.
For the materials I would be looking at the local scrap yards, and for the
welding talking to a couple of welders I work with.

I have bookmarked a thread on another forum where they made a roof rack
using the ladder ramps that are supplied for getting quads in and out
of trailers.
It looked a good cheap way of doing it without any specialist welding
skills.
Let me know if you are feeling adventurous and would like the link.

Darrin,
If it's just for sleeping/walking (no load while in transit), I think
Dennis is right. A few cross-bars and 12mm thick plywood won't cost a
lot.

Thanks Roman, but I suspect a spare wheel and some jerries will go up
there as well (sorry should have been more specific, but have only
just started planning it all out.

Hi Dennis,
I think we can safely say I won't be buying a new one ;-)
Though if my botched job falls apart, and I happen to see some other
intrepid travellers asleep in a rooftent, they may find themselves
waking up on top of a another vehicle.
I had thought about the cross bar side of things, but they seem to be quite expensive just for a pair. The answer of course if to get one
made in Africa, but kinda also defeats the purpose... ;-)
