A pair of Siberian tigers have fun in the snow at a zoo in Yantai city, Shandong province on Dec 6, 2012.

My first encounter with China, many years ago, was in Yantai.

Yantai is about 160km to our East, it is a beautiful coastal city.
However here in Weifang it is very dry.
I really can't remember the last time it rained, so almost no snow.
Can be bitter cold, at minus 15 though.

There are many wild tigers in East China.
Especially up in the North East, towards the Russia border.
They have white tigers up there.

Hi Matt,

Up in Heilongjiang Province, North east China, there are hundreds of wild tigers (+500) in the forests.
As well as wild bears, etc.
All free to roam wherever.

In that area it really is quite a wild place, and many a folk have gone out hunting, only to be "Hunted" and never to return.

"We had just finished work in the forest when the tiger appeared out of nowhere," said Shi Chun, one of the workers who saw the tiger.

Upon seeing the animal, the workers rushed to their tractor to avoid possible attacks. The tiger followed the tractor for several hundred meters before going away, Shi said.,sniped>

I think Dan may be referring to the fallacy that Tiger 'parts' are considered aphrodisiacs in the Far East.

You would be correct :D Although it was perhaps a bit cynical of me to post it. I'm sure that those using tiger parts are in the minority and I'm sure the zoo makes every attempt to educate visitors as to the levels of tiger part consumption in their country (to the point where there are more tigers bred specifically for 'medicine' in farms than there are in their wilderness).
I apologise.

Hi Dan,

I had an idea that's what you may have meant, but didn't say that in case I was mistaken.

No need apologise.

Times have changed a lot here in China.
If you are caught and convicted of killing such a wild animal, for your own gratification, then I an pretty sure the penalty would be extremely harsh. May be even the death, I am sure I read about it a few years ago, some one getting a justly deserve, for killing a spectacular wild animal.
God forbid, any one ever harm a Panda, I guess you would be looking for a police and a jail for safety !

Not quite sure i would like to be in the wild forests in winter, where tiger and bear food could be in short supply.

I don't think you need to apologise Dan, it's the minority with too much money to burn who resort to this practise but in doing so jepordise the future of a beutifull animal.

Same goes for people who buy ivory and rhino horn or trinkets made out of this things

It's an unwritten law in Warwick, that if a peacock from the castle gardens flies into the High Street---

It has absolute right of way.

I don't think the sheep dogs thought the tigers were "frolicking"

"A wild Siberian tiger has reportedly eaten two sheepdogs this month in Hunchun City, northeast China's Jilin Province, local forestry police said Friday."
