Archimedes screw

Invented a long time ago but still in use today.

That is a cracking Idea, I think they made a boat using the same idea for travelling over bogs.

IIRC the screws were hollow like floats, but designed to be filled with Brandy for longer trips and emergencies.

If you remember there was a machine like this built by some chap who crossed the Arctic ice flows in it. The screws provided propulsion across water and allowed him to climb up onto the ice pack. So it wasn't lost, totally.
