Starter motor + dash warning lights

Folks
I have a 1996 1HD-FT with the 12/24v cold weather starter setup.
I've had the dreaded "turn the key, click" syndrome - again. So I've
booked it into an auto-electrical place who rebuilt the starter for me
previously, and I'm due to take it there tomorrow.
Previously it has been due to duff batteries, so I replaced those
yesterday (hoping it would solve the problem), but still "click". So I
got a tow to get it bump-started today, and that has revealed two
problems:
#1 a sort of whirring / rattling noise from underneath that sounded
horribly to me like the starter still being engaged.
#2 some warning lights (charge, oil pressure, turbo, cam-belt and water
in fuel) staying on.
Problem #1 has stopped - hopefully because it has managed to disengage,
and without damaging the fly-wheel &/or starter - but I'm left with
problem #2 of the warning lights.
Does anyone have any suggestions? As I say all I've done is to change
the batteries and to try to start it. I suppose I could have broken
one of the fusible links when taking the terminal off the battery, but I
was careful and they look OK.
I know one cause of warning lights on the dash is a poor connection
around the back of the alternator, but I haven't touched that and it is
definitely charging OK.
The rest of the electrical system seems fine, lights are bright, voltage
is good, etc.
Can a still-partially-engaged starter (if that is what I have) give
these symptoms?
Any ideas? All suggestions welcome.

My bet is the starter. The dash lights symptoms fit. IMHO buy and fit
the starter kit (both engine and battery side) and probably everything
will be normal again.

Hi Chris
I had that problem with the starter last week,so I had to wait the whole
week for a new one from Belgium, and Toyota changed it on Monday. Now the car
starts like new-make me numb!I also thouht it might be the batteries, due to
excessively using Webasto ,but...
Hope you'll solve the problem soon.Good luck
cheers

I have just done the srarter rebuild on mine and it works a treat, the
flashing lights are a symptom of a loose connector, it is worth
checking the small connector on the front of the starter. Keep a
battery spanner handy as if the starter sticks in you really need to
dissconnect them, if the starter stays in and you don't notice it, not
that you would, it can catch fire.

Clive, Lubo, Joaquim and all
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm taking it to a pro today and he seems
very confident that he can sort it out. He reckons that it will have
stripped the reduction gears inside the starter though :-(
I had the "starter keeps running" symptom once this time around.
Fortunately, being a rattly old diesel, turning the engine off seems to
shake it free without the need to disconnect the power. You can just
about hear it running from inside the truck at idle speed, and it's very
obvious from outside.
I'm just thankful it's a manual and so easy to bump-start.
