Simon,
I have been there too and found the rear shox great fun and I was
under a full height ramp!. Great things these gas filled shox, and on
the rear its about impossible to put them in place with the
restraining wire still on keeping them at half extension - easier on
the front though.
Before you do the front be prepared. If they are the original Toy
shox the nuts will be super loctited on - and if anything like mine -
if you put an adjustable spanner on the flats at the top of the
thread it will shear the stud top off as you turn the nut. I
eventually drilled 2 or 3 X 3mm holes in one flat and then split the
nut with a 12inch cold chisel. (I had no nut splitter to hand). I did
this with 3 of the 4 nuts.
As for spring paint, try plastikote, it is a plastic coating, a bit
funny to apply but is very flexible, available in small brushing pots
at a lot of independent DIY places. Just wipe the surface with meths
first. (It is also available as a dip and is great for sealing the
end of ropes on boats - rope is flexible enough to prove it I think !)
I have no problem going under my 80 with two axle stands to hold it
up to the right height, but for safety with a wheel on its side with
a large lump of hardwood on top, surely if it fell, even if the tough
timber split, the truck would not crush a split rim steel rim? Its
the sort of thing you have to do when you venture away from a society
having garages with ramps etc.
Cheers
