Thoughts on upgrading to a 100 series

Hi Reno,
I've been looking into them for a while....
There is a weakness with te A arms, particularly on the diesels with
the heavier engines and in Aus they are being fixed for free by Toyota,
although in reality if you are going to be loading the car up and doing
a lot of off roading there are standard recomendations for fitting
reinforcing plates to them to prevent the cracking.
If you are going for a suspension lift to for example get a 2" lift you
are also advised to drop the diff otherwise the lift will increase the
severity of the angles for the CV joints causing them to wear quicker.
Slee Offroad in the US do a drop kit that is pretty cheap and easy to
install.

I've not heard that one. Is this the petrol or diesel that you are
talking about? The diesel is essentially the 1HD-FT engine but with
electronic management on the fuel system.
The engine could do with a bigger intercooler to keep the temps down
and as long as you fit a pyro guage to monitor the temps I would have
thought you should be OK.
Fortunately over here with the mass of SUVs from BMW, Volvo, VW, Land
Rover, the 100 series is starting to look like a bit of a dinosaur in
comparison, espescially if you only need it to take the kids to school
so the prices are dropping. I have seen a few reasonable 2000 models
priced around the ?11-14,000 mark.

True but you still get an overall gain. The key thing is a decent bash
plate to protect the steering, diff, sump and gearbox - with decent
protection underneath it makes it a bit easier.
It will end up looking like one of those rediculous racing quads.
Have you seen any kits like that? I haven't.
Another thing you can do to keep the head temps down is to disconnect
the EGR solenoids so the exhaust gasses aren't recirculated - OK, not
so good for emissions, but leads to lower head temps and in some cases
inproved performance/efficiency.

I understood the main problem with lowering a center diff on IFS is when the
front wheels are compressed the diff pivots down and can ground out, ie the
clearance left when you hit a bump is less than when static, reduced just
when you need it most.

is those 'EGR' the exhaust valves we've been talking about? I still
have that random clicking and the 'Toy ' guys insist it is coming
from them.
Anyway I can't imagine all Cruisers between 95-98 going around
ticking like remote controlled bomb waiting to explode:-(((((((((

You can disconnect the vaccuum hoses to the EGR valves, plug their ends
with a ball bearing or a small screw, but leave the wiring running to
the solenoids that actuate it. this way the computer will happily open
and shut the EGR actuator solenoids but no exhaust gasses will be going
anywhere. In about pre 1996 toyotas you can rip all the actuators and
solenoids off and trim the wiring loom and tuck the excess wire inside
the loom and make it appear as though the system was never there but
since then the computers have got smarter and gets upset when it does
not 'see' the solenoids. If emission gear gets inspected at awrrant time
you better make sure it is working agin when it goes in.
In regards 100 series 1HD-FTE's cracking heads I have never heard of it
(excepting a run it dry type boil up) since the combustion chambers are
in the top of the pistons generally if run way too hard for too long or
with trashed injectors that are leaking like sieves then usually it is
the piston crown that melts and vanishes out the exhaust port as molten
aluminium.

Hi Reno,
If you do remember who does it, I would be interested to know - always
useful to explore all the options.
I've tried searching on various permutations of Maxi Drive on various
100 series lists and it hasn't thrown up any results.

Hi Malcolm,
Sorry not sure what you are getting at.
The most popular diff drop kit is the one sold by Slee Offroad in the US which
is used widely in the US and Aus. It holds the diff in the fixed position so
it doesn't pivot anywhere when the wheels are compressed.
It lowers the front Diff by about an inch so when you have lifted the front by
2" you only get a 1" improvement under the diff.
Many people do run without dropping the diff, but they just end up going
through CVs a bit more often.

US go for a solid axle conversion instead. But then in the US we have a
wide selection of Dana 44 and 60 (even 70) solid axles available in junk
yards (not sure how you say junk yard in British).
In "British" we call a Junk yard a Land Rover dealership....I'll get my coat

I know the center diffs on Nissan Navaras are fixed, I got the idea from
somewhere the some center difs travelled, although in retrospect that would
be a lot of hassle for no reason? Don't suppose you can fit some 9.00R16's
on a 100 series after dropping the diff?
