[underbelly protection] [80]

Hi Guys
I was wondering if and when I do get someone to bend some metal for me what
should be protected underneath the cruiser. I say this because the only
protection that is there is plastic, what a cop out for Toyota. The guy I
thought I had on board for some metal work has copped out because he has
enough work, so ill have to sourse someone else that can do some metal work.
When I look at the under body there seems to be a few areas that need some
protection.
I am going to start with some protection for the rad after a post I read
about a stone blowing a rad out and god knows I am behind dumper trucks all
the time and have had a windscreen put in already, but at least you can
still drive on with that.
Anyway is there any place that should not be covered under there.??
I was looking and it seems that a skid plate could be bolted on to the
excisting tow hooks at the front and then go back over the bars running in
the same direction as the chaisis (sorry can't remember their name) but how
to attach it, I dont know??????.
Futher on running a plate from one side of the chaisis to the other making
allowence for the bumps etc and leaving holes for various things like engine
oil plug, gear box etc. Then going on futher back covering the rear diff and
the bar that hangs down a little.
Could plates be used over laping a little from front to back.??
Does anything need to be cooled by air while driving under there that maybe
should not be covered.??
What thickness of steel plate would be strong enough to protect.??
Do I need to protect the steering joints. ??
Any info you have would be very much appriciated as always.
I know I will get off road but I want to be prepared with my luck I would
hit the only hidden boulder in the county that would take out both diffs and
the gear box and maybe its brothers would take out my steering, well I am a
pesimist when it comes to the cruiser.

John,
I guess you should strongly consider coming to Billing. You'll be able
to meet people, look at what they've got, speak to suppliers and order
things you fancy.
As for the underbody plates - they can be formed to follow the shapes
of the plastic ones, only made of 5mm steel. An extra protection worth
considering is under the transfer box.
As for the radiator - buy a piece of steel mesh, cut and bend it to
shape of the back side of the plastic grille, paint it to the colour
of your choice, fix it to the grille with a few self tapping screws
and presto! you have a rad protection.

Hey Roman
Thanks for that, it does seem to me that it needs more protection and thats
why I ask.Its just as usual im very unsure of what I can do , I have the
ideas but not the skills to carry them out. I will do that to the
grille, good idea and then move on so any advice you have give it to me. I
would like to go to billing but I think its in July if my old memory serves
me right and thats when we will have two students staying so can't go. Is
there any other shows worth going to later on. The only shows here are
farmers markets.

John,
There are no other shows worth attending. If you've seen Biling you've
seen them all, only Billing is the biggest.
Why don't you take the student's with you and give them a lesson in
the quintessential British/Irish lifestyles? You'll be amazed whom you
can meet there. Landrovers attract all sorts of people.

Funny you should mentuion this as I have been out looking at the
vulnerability of both rad and oil cooler at the front of my car. Just
wondered what gauge mesh you ended up with...
I have a metal plate that protects the steering but wanted to make something
for the front which does look very exposed.

I'm not sure about the gauge. It's one of those rhomboid mesh types
picked up from the local metal merchants. It doesn't have to be
bulletproof, just to stop twigs and pebbles.
As you consider doing trans-Africa, another useful rad protection is a
fine net, like mosquito net - only stronger, to keep the rad clear of
grass seeds which can clog it really fast.
The front isn't that bad compared with landrovers, but whatever
protection you consider, just keep an eye on protection vs weight
issue - all the plates added together can weight well over 50kg.

Thanks Roman
Already have a home-made net for the front and had a plate made up for the
steering which I painted black and bolted onto the front. Good and solid and
as you say, I'm watching the weight. Will sort out the rad protection as and
when... And then look forward to seeing whats on offer at Billing. Still
trying to resolve things in the load space but what I want I can't afford...

Hi Guys
Here I go again but if you put metal plate on the underbelly does it have to
hold the the weight of the cruiser to protact or could you use a soft
bendable material like alloy. If one of you have the skills and are doing
underbody protection for your 80, would you concider doing two pieces of the
same metal plate or what ever and letting me buy one of you. I know its a
bit cheeky but I can't seem to get what I want and I certainly can't do it
myself. Roman I would love to help you but believe me by the time I asked
you the whys and what ifs and the whats this and that you would have
finished the job six months ago or be in jail doing hard labour for my
murder.

One of the better companies around for under body protection is
Paris4x4 (http://www.paris4x4.com), but you need to be able to speak
French in order to understand their website!

Hi Julian
Thanks for that, I did get in toutch with 4x4 Paris weeks ago and have their
brochure but they seem expensive. So what I would like I can't afford, but
you are right they have good stuff for the under bellyand other parts. Devon
4x4 also do stuff so I sent them an e-mail to see the cost.
