Useless Off road and overlanding kit survey

Alright guys
Everyone has a piece of kit they bought thinking it was going to be
great and never used either because it was crap, not upto the job or
you'd have to go to mars to find the terrain it was intended for.
Would be interesting to hear what useless gear you have stashed away
in your shed... we all have something...... and yes we'll have a laugh
at your expense.
Mine is a ground plough anchor - massive piece of kit weighs at least
25KG - never used. So useless in fact that the guy I bought it off
told me he'd had it for years and never used it. With a record like
that I'll have to take it to Africa!!
Time to confess guys!!

Mine is lots of rope - I bought too much (I did however give away about 25
metres of the stuff - the Tuareg guide that I had, and had travelled with
before liked the colour (a nice blue) for his camels!, and a cargo net;
equally unused, Oh yes, and two dumpy 5 tonne lift jacks; never used, not
even once, and two rather too large (and heavy) Axel stands, although I have
used the Axel stands - once, and about 50 ratchet tie-downs (that I keep
doing up wrong so they never work properly!).

Hi Niall,
Well for our trip to Morocco last year the list could go on and on...
I took an air bag jack, but since I never got stuck or had a puncture it remained in it's back.
I took a portable axle stand - obviously driving an LC I didn't have any problems so that is nice and shiney.
Shower 'tent' that bolts on to the roof rack - never bothered with that - always easier to just wash in the open - might consider it if I had a decent power shower fitted.
Recovery kit - again didn't get stuck so didn't use it ;-)
Wife and children....... OK, better stop there!
Regards
Julian

never used so flogged it off in jo'burg. the only other thing that i always
carry, although have never really used in anger, are all the oe toyota
workshop manuals for my engine, body and electrics.

To compare and contrast ...

I was flagged down by a neighbour renting a cottage at the end of our drive this morning. He'd driven his VW beetle onto the muddy verge and was totally stuck.

He had no wellies, no tow-rope, couldn't read the hand-book, didn't recognise the towing eye in the toolkit (or in the hand-book's description thereof when I pointed it out), didn't know how or where to attach it to his car and - perhaps understandably - didn't appreciate that it had a left-hand thread.

So I pulled him out.

Maybe he'd be interested in some of the excess clobber you guys have ...

>From what you say he would be better off relying on the skills of others who
can use the stuff, some people aren=92t interested enough to be safe, plus you
get to have some practise!

I think the US system of driver education classes at school is a good one,
we should have it here and it should include some recovery and maintenance
skills.
