I know it sounds a bit perfidious from someone ho has lavished a lot
of time and effort on his landcruiser, but the further I travel
afield, the more I'm inclined to think that you don't have to drive a
fully speced, fully armoured and fully equipped vehicle and still have
lots of fun.
I am quite sure almost every route can be done in almost anything -
look at locals driving 30 year old Peugeots with awkwardly angled
wheels!

Roman is absolutely right.
I think it boils down to the haste in which you want to get to your
destination. Working with remote communities stuck on the top of a
mountain, its often the case that after a hard slog up there in an 80
in 4WD I find a Yugo or 15 year-old Golf parked up there. The
difference is that they have all day to pick their way up there - but
still arrive - just like those in the desert. We have to do 6 such
visits in a day so we need the vehicle that gets us there asap. And
the 4Runner/Surf/Prado IFS is still one of the best IFS 4WD's that I
have seen around, and my 4R used to go wherever my 80 gets. I won't
refuse a 100 IFS if it was offered to me.
