Obviously changes are made to improve performance of one sort or another, but I've found from years of buying cars that once you've made ANY sort of change to a vehicle it becomes more 'yours'
I think it's something like marking your territory. but I have refrained from peeing up against the rear wheel.
Even the smallest change can do this, I've just stuck the remote for opening my garage doors to the dash on the Lexus, now how can I fit a winch bumper

looks, i can not stand to be part of the crowd
capability, if it can be made to perform better then i will.
comfort, whats that?

....as I recall, I always had cars stat stuck out a bit. Maybe just the color (signal yellow Ford Escort -and later Capri in same "noisy" color) Its a lot easier to find your car at the mall after shopping (when I park the car I never believe it is possible to forget where exactly you put it!!!) when it sticks out in the crowd

I have often heard people say to me "Why don´t you wave back to me, when we meet in the traffic"?....and I am like "well, you have a dark blue VW Passat, okay"? ...So, maybe we decide instinctively to personalize the car to stick out in the crowd -or the opposite, to buy an anonymous car to disappear in the crowd ??

Modifying the truck is a way to specialize the truck to your own specific needs -also inventing new solutions -or combinations of existing gear, is a well known hobby in order to go higher or deeper or longer or whatever ...

I love planning new stuff for my truck....all the ideas and dreams...looking for possibilities (-and prizes), trying to sell the idea to the other half of the household, recieving new parts and put'em on.....feel like an artist/inventor, taking photos and sharing with others....hmm, so there is a social side to it as well  .....Going laning alone is not as fun as 2 or more cars together? (always safer with more cars, of course!)...

Same reason why you would get s tailor made suit and to improve on any manufactures comprise that does not take into account our individual needs.
