Crickey Chas,I was camped down in the high country of the North Island one late autumn night,had to drive a Leyland Beaver arctic tanker leaving about 6 in the morning for about 200 miles and when I started her up the windscreen was iced up.No windscreen washers in those days so to save a walk of about200 yards,thought okay I'll hang my head out of the door and when I get to the local garage 2miles away I'll wash the screen with their hose.Their hose was frozen,everyone still tucked up in bed so I had to scrape it of with a screwdriver.Never got caught again.
 
There's going to be people that do this. I can see it now.
 
Oh yes, and leave your headlights on overnight to prevent them freezing over.

As someone else has pointed out, it's possibly started...how true this service docket is I'm not sure...
