This was an old trick used by the resistance when they hid in the forests of Poland during the 2nd World war.

It is a pretty neat way of making a cooking fire. Little mess and very efficient.

It was Stan who owned a red FJ40 that put me onto them at Lincomb one time. He'd brought a couple along to lite up of an evening but never got around to using them and gave me one to bring home and try. He said that seasoned Larch was the best to make them from and to pour a little lamp oil down them to help them along a bit.
