    Land Cruiser KDJ150L DPF problem.

I understand (from John Cadogan) that on newer Toyotas the driver has the ability to trigger a static regen via the dash menu, trucks have had this ability to manually trigger regen for some time, sometimes needed if you have to cancel a regen...ie in my case no wishing to blow superheated...

    Sad day, Don't hate me

I'm another one who isn't interested in anything sold new in Britain, this has been the case for a number of years now, the good lady feels the same. No plans to sell the 120, i keep it serviced and rustproofed well and its just so nice to drive shaking off the third world road surfaces found...

    Hot Rear Disc

Yes fronts are 4 piston opposed jobbies...speaking of which, Cruiser84 whilst you're working on the brakes its worth servicing the front brakes well, the inner lower piston is very prone to seizing up, luckily being opposed piston if you whip one pad out at a time you can lever one piston in and...

    An interesting thought Shayne.

    Hot Rear Disc

Questioning myself now Karl and happy to be wrong, if they are sliders then they need lubing and making sure there's nothing catching preventing them releasing fully when one releases the brake. The Forester brakes are sliders all round, but could have sworn the 120 rears were opposed design.
  9. J

    Hot Rear Disc

Without crawling underneath as i recall all the calipers on 120's are of the opposed piston design so no worries about slide pins sticking. All i can think of is the pads are too tight a fit in the caliper and so failing to retract properly, i'd be inclined to whip them off give the sides of the...

    Replacement headlights

I'm surprised the bumper needs to come off, definately worth removing a battery at a time which is worth it even to swap the sidelight bulbs out but having to remove the bumper seems ludicrous for a simple headlight unit swapover on something generally as well designed as these are, presumably...

    Replacement headlights

Yes that is good news, its MOT time in March and assuming they pass the test again (not been mentioned yet) i'll get a pair in the spring and fit them in the warmer weather, if Karl's right and the bumper needs to come off don't fancy doing that in the depths of winter if i can help it.

    Replacement headlights

Fun??? or no, no power steering, steering column bolted straight to the chassis (your imagination will do for the pounding your arms and wrists took from pot holes and drains), direct action clutch without assistance, freeze your brass monkeys off in winter hot as hell in summer, if you...

    Replacement headlights

Yup, most work mornings i'm heading out the door at 3.30ish, just punch the number in without a second thought, autopilot. Replacement headlights

How come i missed your post but saw Karl's, losing the bleedin plot i tell yer, we had the alarm lads here earlier and when they asked me for the alarm code i'd forgotten it entirely yet use it at least once a day, the joys of morphing rapidly into an old fart. There's a seller on ebay offering...

    Replacement headlights

Yes i'm tempted but the experience with the dreadful things for the Mitsi i do not want to repeat. Hoping someone else has tried them and could give an appraisal, would like to keep the adjuster motors if possible but its not the end of the world if they don't transfer, definately want to avoid...

    Replacement headlights

Have polished the original headlights multiple times, but the fading of the plastic covers seems to be right through the top half. Full genuine Toyota replacments from Roughtrax would be the ideal, but they also list aftermarket replacement made by Depo for half the cost, it notes they don't...

    Jump Start mess up

Circa £300 for the 150 model. Just had a poke nose and it appears you can get replacement batteries for the Jump Start 4000 for around £85/95, think i'll stay old school and replace the battery on that when the time comes, nothing wrong with the case leads or clamps.

Cor Blimey Karl, impressed by that jump pack you have, until i just looked them up, going off for a lie down in a darkened room having seen the price

    Jump Start mess up

I changed both a month or two back, the replacement set which cost the previous owner about £150 plus fitting from Mr T lasted 7 years before starting to fail, i bought Exides for a change from Tayna which cost about the same, note the ones i bought are the standard size not the supersize which...

    Jump Start mess up

Few years ago i bought a massive and heavy old school jump pack, which i still have and still works well (Jump Start 4000 or summat like that), maybe the cost of buying and keeping charged such a thing is justifiable, course it means carrying it around if you're the sort of person prepared to...

    Jump Start mess up

Just remembered i was daft enough to trust someone else connecting up. Few years ago, cold spell like this a Polish bloke worked at our place at the time, couldn't start his Corsa just clicking, i offered a jump start and got my end connected but he got it wrong his end with a sizeable flash...

    Jump Start mess up

Known this happen on older Mercs, generally it blows the overvoltage protection relay which protects the rest of the system. Whether there's an equivalent type of thing on our vehicles haven't a clue.

    Front and rear bumper recommendations?

If you can lose the vehicle for a week or so a welder/fabricator might take a cash job on for some extra wonga after hours, probably best if you can find someone local, show him some pics of what you want and be around regularly to approve and/or ask for alterations as things progress.

Batteries - which ones are best value/quality

Just shows how things deteriorate and you don't really notice, with the new batteries engine turned over much much faster than with the old set this morning first start, and after our lunchtime meeting today 50 miles away faster still. Those 7 year Mr T batteries must have been one sharp frost...

Batteries - which ones are best value/quality

Used to buy Varta, Shayne, but standing our old Merc one winter the damned CTEK (never again) died unbeknown to me and the less than year old Varta silver was unrecoverable in a matter of weeks. Since then its been Yuasa only for me, but this time i've given Exide a try to see how they last...

Batteries - which ones are best value/quality

Tayna spot on as usual, paid the basic delivery charge, ordered yesterday lunchtime and they turned up at 10.45 today via DHL with 1 hour time slot, very well packed, stickers on them to remind one to remove the travel plugs...heard a hiss of air when removing the first plug on each so they do...

To be fair given their extra performance the 306mm long ones are better value £ per amp, but i know from you lads its a tight squeeze one side at least getting the bigguns in, hence why i've gone for same size replacements. Card wise dunno what happened to the replacement they sent out but its...

I'm still trucking, of a fashion, sadly my lot won't specify a manual box even from Daf which seem to be about the only maker that still offers them, give me eye teeth for a 14 litre Cummins Eaton Twin Splitter box Rockwell axle drivetrain again. Went to start it thismorning and sure enough won't turn over enough to start, to be fair its not had much use or a decent run for a while. Who is doing what maintenance today?

Daughter and her chap both have the same type R's and work on them together, daughter's i believe came out OK (and she tells me she lubed the pins going back in and she looks after the car well anyway) but her chap's needed heating so welded in by salt corrosion were they, knocked hell out of...

Who is doing what maintenance today?

Well technically yesterday. Full brake service, clean up exercise the pistons in their bores and made sure all the sliders were moving freely, fresh lube up and reassemble, no new parts needed. Surprising how even when you do them every year initially getting the pistons to slide back in...

Glow Plugs will not 'click' off and instead stay on while vehicle is running.

For some reason the low tension feed is staying live and not timing out, haven't a clue why but easy enough to make the plugs manual operation only even if for temporary. Fit a switch into the low tension side of the relay from a suitable live feed so you can control the glow plugs from inside...

    76 series yes or no

On the subject of mpg, if the '76 under consideration has the 4.0 litre petrol engine, if you have reliable long term autogas supplies convenient for you then there's plenty of room underneath for an LPG tank or two. Not sure on how young or old you are considering, but assuming its to be used...

Aircon, big or bigger bill approaching

Tony if you/they put the green dye in the system when refilled, after a couple of days get underneath and have a look up where the pipes run above the gearbox to the rear unit, i could easily see where the drips had run down without any need for UV light. Its almost always the rear run of pipes...

    LJ70 Suspension Comfort

I assumed your vehicle would be on leaf springs, my 70 was also on coils all round and despite it being a SWB benefitted from a very comfortable ride. I'm not assuming new shockers won't help, that was purely a turn of phrase, to be more clear i should have said i would try new shockers first...

    LJ70 Suspension Comfort

SuryaG. Assuming new shockers don't help, which would be my first call, it might be that your present springs are weak and worn out with the longer leaves no longer supporting the weight of the vehicle so the progressively stiffer sections of the springs are in use all the time hence the...

    Tire Recommendations

I run the Yokos that GeekOKent mentions, would buy again, quiet running good wearing astonishing wet grip plus snowflake/mountain stamped so full winter rated, however didn't come with a very deep tread compared with tyres like BFG AT's, only around 9mm new. The Falkens mentioned i have also...

    Timing belt change

Did mine, wish all engines were like this, the only cambelt approaching these for ease i've come across was a Volvo 244. Proper timing marks, none of that engine locking kit cobblers (to frighten the punters into paying large numbers of notes to the main dealer), if you have a set of sockets...

Aircon, big or bigger bill approaching

You really don't want to know the cost involved, ended up with fully repiping front to back, but there were 4 small leaks at the front end too requiring welding/jointing and at least one pipe replacing. However we now have full working dual aircon with a 2 year warranty, lets hope the warranty...

Adventures in EGR removal and fuel trimming

24mpg isn't that bad if you're jogging about stop starting hill climbing and just negotiating typical road layouts, you're doing very well to get over 30mpg with a Cruiser unless on a long run and keeping the speed down. 25mpg is about our norm, that's about the same as our Forester 2.5turbo...

‘D’ light on the dash not illuminating.

Probably the same bulb as fitted to the 90 series dash. I had exactly the same issue with the Collie, finding the right bulb isn't easy so got a couple from the dealer parts dept, not a stock item.

Aircon, big or bigger bill approaching

I spotted the leak myself, though nothing to say further parts might be needed yet. Vehicle was around 11 years old before i bought it, had no underbody treatment before so the alloy corrosion of the pipes was already no doubt underway. These rear aircon pipes are a regular failing.

Aircon, big or bigger bill approaching

Booked in later in the week for Aircon leak, you all know where it will be from, soon as i said what vehicle he knew why i was there, they had a much newer Shogun and Disco 4 in there for exactly the same issue, said the Disco was a pig of a job. They're going to diagnose and appraise first and...

    CTEK Battery Chargers

Supposedly you can leave one on permanently without any problem, ie over winter for a summer use only vehicle...which is great so long as it doesn't pack up mid winter which mine did. They also can pulse charge and other things which mean bugger all to me, also battery recovery which failed to...

    CTEK Battery Chargers

Interesting, Lidl used to do their own version of the CTEK. I've had 2 Silverline (Lidl) smart chargers, they both packed up as did the CTEK that went before them, all in about the same time frame. One of them going down unnoticed by me also ruined a recently bought Varta battery on my old Merc...

After market parking sensors for 2004 J120

If you're having a camera try and fit it at least halfway up the back door or preferably at the top, so the lens can point down at an angle, so you see the whole of the rear bumper and as far out behind as the lens will allow. Seen too many cameras on vehicles that look straight back which gives...
