Hi Peter,
After damaging my stock exhaust I reconfigured it to run under the right
hand sill and exit in front of the rear wheel as an experiment. I only
retained the small front box, the rest is straight pipe. It is somewhat
noisier than stock, though not massively so and it's not an unpleasant sound
or very intrusive. With the windows up it is insignificant compared to the
noise from the tyres (Simex type), wind, engine etc.
With a decent quality 2.5" stainless pipe and bigger silencer I think it
would be perfectly acceptable. Ultimately it comes down to personal
opinion...
Losing the big centre box has made lots of room under the car; enough for a
water tank or additional battery.
I haven't had any issues with soot on the rear wheel despite having a quite
smoky motor until recently.

Subject: [ELCO] 2.5" Stainless Steel Exhaust French Style: Noise

I have not seen it, but I am told that in France when some people fit a
larger size (stainless steel) exhaust, it is common for the exhaust to exit
from the side and in front of the rear wheel.
=A0
In these circumstances, do you know if the noise of the exhaust more
noticeable particlarly when driving=A0with the front side windows open? I have
been told that this is the case, but the person who told me this=A0had little
experience of Landcruisers and even less of the 'French style' of exhaust
fitting.
=A0
I am considering putting in=A0a 2.5"=A0stainless steel exhaust and possibly in
the 'French style', but only if the noise is not increased!
