6th Wheel - Dual Wheel carrier

Hello guys.
Looking for some advice re 6th wheel.
It's too big and alkward to put into the vehicle.
Will not have a roof rack.
LRFT takes up the space underneath the vehicle.
So if I want to take a sixth wheel, will have to fit a dual wheel carrier.
Kaymar seem to be the household name but with Hollywood prices. They
also seem to be quite heavy - never mind when loaded with 2 wheels!
Anyone out there got dual wheel carriers fitted? Would be interested
to know what make and where you sourced them from.
Thanks
Niall
The only other option

Hi Niall,
Actually, having a roof rack is not such a bad idea. You may not need
a full roof rack, just simple roof rails to attach a spare wheel, or -
to keep the weight down- only a spare 6th tyre.

Hey Niall
Correct me if im wrong but you are running the 285s on 16s are you not and
if so then you wont have enough room to fit two wheels side by side as they
will block out your rear lights.

Hi Jon
s
Yes a good option. I've been searching the www for past DIY jobs -
saving on re-inventing the wheel factor.
New you're looking at least =A31200!!
Cheers
Niall

Yes you will haves to put one up under the others, like this

Hi Roman
The only thing I'm planning on putting on the roof is the tent sitting
on rails. This will negate the need for a rack.
You're right an alternative is putting the 6th wheel on a set or bars
which weight wise would not be the end ot the world, but would impeed
my sunroof game viewing....
This seems to be the only alternative to getting the expensive
replacement rear bumper.
Or else go do some work experience at kwik fitt tryes :)
Thanks
Niall

Niall,
A kaymar style bumper (I have a variety called Outback extreme -
http://www.iefeng.co.za/bolt_on_wheel_carriers/landcruiser_80_series.htm)
is not the only thing you'll have to take care of. You will also
need to take into account the extra weight of the bumper, brackets and
two wheels, which translates into even stiffer rear springs and
suitable shocks.

Hi John
Good pick-up!
This is a concern.
The lads that are pricing the bumper will have to confirm that it'll
take Mitchelin XZL Mud Terrain tyres 7.50 - 16 or 235/85R16
Thanks
Niall

Hi guys,
The rear lights will be blocked anyway, regardless of how big the
tyres are. The bumper comes with its own rear lights, not as fancy as
the OEM but sufficiently visible and road legal.

I know - some of those bumpers weigh 50KG + 2 steel wheels and tyres a bad dose of saggy arse syndrome.
A kaymar style bumper would mess up my weight distribution plans......
I need more weight front of the rear axel - not hanging out the back
with the tent, LRFT, fridge...

Hi Benoit
Yes - thats how its done, but I think the rear lights will still be
blocked - hence the ned for a new bumper also
Thanks
Niall

I had seen some guy who have put his spare wheels on the over
windscreen, like some sun block. Well his is not tall so he can see
under them to the front.

Hi Clive
Works for single wheel carriers. Doubles require a replacement bumper
also to get over blocking the lights
Niall

Niall,
I had been looking at usingv two of the Kaymar single carriers, but they also lead to the rear lights being obscured.
I have always wondered about putting one on the bonnet like the old landies. You would need heavy duty struts, but worth considering.
Is there any space inside?

Get a roof rack. Always useful later for carrying big loads eg garden
fencing, etc. The double carriers at the back are great but the added weight
is a real pendulum problem. Just pick up one wheel and tyre, then double it,
then add the weight of the brackets and swing arms, then add LRFT and you
can see why Roman talks about upgrading springs and shocks.

Also, have you tried viewing out of the sunroof - you will be far more comfortable sitting on the wheel on the roof rack.

Hi Jeremy
Have burnt alot of grey matter on the weight distribution, centre of
gravity etc.
Am hell bent on having nothing up top except the tent.
Either I go Kaymar style or put the 6th wheel on a set of bars forward
of the tent. I'm also having another look inside the vehicle...
Cheers
Niall

I'm sure there's probably a very good reason not to, but how about on the
bonnet, but you will need something to hold the bonnet up when needed?

Hi Chas
......haven't seen any cruiser anywhere with a spare on the bonnet.
Must be a good reason? - Not sure what it is - would want to be well
bolted on - imagine a wheel coming through the windscreen!!
Thanks
Niall
